CORAL GABLES, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Two suspects are behind bars after allegedly targeting the South Florida home of a couple killed in a Kenya helicopter crash \u2014 and police say this may just scratch the surface of a sprawling identity theft investigation.<\/p>\n
Officers with the Coral Gables Police Department arrested 40-year-old Geybert Garcia and 24-year-old Melany Perdomo on Tuesday after investigators said they burglarized the home of 55-year-old Henry Parra and 42-year-old Adam Hlavaty.<\/p>\n
Parra and Hlavaty were killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya, according to CBS Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak<\/a> said Friday that investigators believe Garcia and Perdomo targeted the home after learning the couple had died. Police say a ping from the couple’s stolen MacBook led investigators to Garcia and Perdomo.<\/p>\n “We believe right now, they were targeted the day they were killed in that crash,” Hudak said during a news conference. “Which I find reprehensible.”<\/p>\n Police say the suspects allegedly stole jewelry, artwork and vehicles from the home.<\/p>\n See also: South Florida man convicted in scheme to illegally ship aircraft parts to Russia<\/a><\/p>\n But investigators said the case appears to go far beyond one burglary.<\/p>\n A search warrant at a Miami-Dade home in the 8300 block of Northwest 195th Terrace led investigators to passports, driver’s licenses, firearms, computers, DVRs and other evidence, according to police.<\/p>\n Authorities also said they found evidence that fraudulent identification documents were being produced.<\/p>\n “They had printed a fake ID with the two individuals’ address in the printer,” Hudak said.<\/p>\n Police say they believe the identities of Parra and Hlavaty may have been used as part of the alleged scheme.<\/p>\n The investigation also uncovered stolen vehicles. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office<\/a>, detectives initially found a stolen truck with a California license plate, which led them to five stolen vehicles.<\/p>\n Police also recovered at least a dozen firearms, Hudak said.<\/p>\n “This is a case that has many tentacles,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told CBS Miami<\/a>, calling it “shocking and unfathomable” that the alleged crimes occurred while families were mourning the loss of their loved ones.<\/p>\n
