It’s one thing to move on from older, expensive players. But it’s another thing to say goodbye to a second-year quarterback on a rookie deal.

Who had Cam Miller as the longest-tenured quarterback in the Miami Dolphins position room by the end of August? Show of hands?

If your hand is up, you’re either a liar or general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. The Miami Dolphins have continued to take a blowtorch to last season’s quarterback room. After a brief reunion with former Dolphins passer Tua Tagovailoa on Saturday night, the Dolphins have traded Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars and made a huge statement to the rest of the roster in the process.

Miami Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan just sent a loud and clear message to his roster in trading Quinn Ewers

No one is sacred in these parts. Trading away Jaylen Waddle already proved that. Cutting Tyreek Hill was an affirmation of change. But names like Hill and Bradley Chubb were older, expensive players. Tua Tagovailoa was a necessary move — things were ugly and expensive there, too. But the Waddle deal was the “big fish” move of the offseason. The dust settled from that blockbuster in March, and this team has pushed along with limited cap space and a tight budget.

Logic dictated that second-year players on rookie contracts would be the kind of pieces this team may need to hold on to out of necessity. Logic was wrong. Or at least I was…

Because if second-year quarterback Quinn Ewers, who was reportedly strong in the spring but putrid in training camp, can be moved? Why couldn’t second-year running back Ollie Gordon? Or third-year quarterback Jaylen Wright? Or any other player that may still be young and cheap but isn’t a part of this offseason’s influx of talent. Heck, the Dolphins traded Tutu Atwell earlier this week after signing him in March. So while the expensive vets spent the spring looking over their shoulder for their walking papers, now it’s the holdover youngsters’ turn. Heads on a swivel, gang.
