The Miami Dolphins<\/a>\u2018 quarterback room is currently in flux. Malik Willis? Locked and loaded. Behind him? Not so much!<\/p>\n

The Dolphins cast another stone at their quarterback room to shake things up once again on Saturday, trading backup quarterback Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville<\/a>. The ultimate net gain or loss of the move will, ultimately, depend on what else the Miami Dolphins do at quarterback in the days (hours, even) ahead. But this part of the calculus is, in my opinion, one of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan\u2019s best feathers in the cap to date. <\/p>\n

The trade compensation for Quinn Ewers makes the Miami Dolphins a winner<\/p>\n

Let me be clear. I\u2019m not calling Jacksonville a loser in this deal at Miami\u2019s expense. Ewers\u2019 performance will dictate whether or not this is a good move for the Jaguars. But let\u2019s boil the Quinn Ewers experience in Miami down to some simple numbers: <\/p>\n

\u2013 The Miami Dolphins draft Quinn Ewers in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft
\u2013 Ewers plays 179 snaps across three modest starts and cleanup duty
\u2013 Miami\u2019s front office and coaching staff are flipped
\u2013 Ewers endures training camp injury and largely disappoints with underwhelming camp performance
\u2013 Ewers is traded straight up for a 6th round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a math guy, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Trading Ewers for a better pick than the one you spent on him, even if it\u2019s 18 months out, is a mathematical win for the Miami Dolphins. Especially when you consider how frustrating Ewers\u2019 training camp performance once. <\/p>\n

The other shoe needs to drop to fully assess the transition of the quarterback room behind Malik Willis. Trading for a high-upside quarterback would have me feeling differently than how I would feel if the team claimed someone else\u2019s cut. But to just boil down Ewers as a team asset and consider that his value appreciated in less than 200 snaps when the most recent information was way down? That\u2019s a proverbial \u201ccash out\u201d I can applaud. <\/p>\n

Jon-Eric Sullivan didn\u2019t draft Ewers. But he did seize the opportunity to jump on a sensible offer for the quarterback. One that valued Ewers at a higher price than the one it cost to acquire him. And that makes the Dolphins side of this deal a winning one. <\/p>\n

Grade: A+<\/p>\n
