ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. \u2014 Publix is committing $1 million to The Nature Conservancy to fund two conservation projects in Florida and South Carolina.<\/p>\n
The donation will target environmental issues impacting freshwater systems and forest habitats in the company\u2019s operating area. The initiative includes efforts to improve water quality along Florida\u2019s coast and restore native pine forests in South Carolina.<\/p>\n
The Florida project focuses on the Indian River Lagoon, a 156-mile estuary along eastern Florida\u2019s coastal barrier islands. <\/p>\n
The lagoon is home to more than 4,300 species, including fish, shellfish, wading birds, endangered manatees and a unique population of bottlenose dolphins found nowhere else. <\/p>\n
Excess nutrients from stormwater runoff currently threaten the ecosystem by triggering harmful algal blooms that block sunlight and kill critical seagrass.<\/p>\n
To combat the runoff, funding will support The Nature Conservancy\u2019s \u201cRunoff to Resilience\u201d pilot project. The program retrofits existing stormwater ponds with smart technology designed to control water flow and hold runoff longer. <\/p>\n
This process allows pollutants to be filtered out before reaching the lagoon while strategic water releases help reduce local flooding and shoreline erosion.<\/p>\n

In South Carolina, the funding will support the restoration of 4,000 acres of longleaf pine forest through prescribed burns. <\/p>\n
Longleaf pine ecosystems once covered roughly 97 million acres across the Southeastern United States, but deforestation and natural disasters have reduced that footprint to around 4%. <\/p>\n
Prescribed burns remove competing vegetation that consumes water, allowing more rainfall to reach streams, wetlands, and aquifers.<\/p>\n

Both conservation projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.<\/p>\n
