TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The roundabout at Maclay Boulevard and Maclay Commerce Drive is officially open after nearly a year of construction.<\/p>\n
The Market District Association hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday to celebrate the reopening of the roads and the new roundabout.<\/p>\n
For almost a year, detours and road closures made it difficult for customers to reach stores and restaurants in the Market District.<\/p>\n
Terry White, owner of Sage Restaurant, said the closures affected business when construction began.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it first started, when the road first got shut down, it was pretty dramatic… but it definitely, when it first started, affected us pretty badly,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n
Eddie Agramonte, owner of Gordo\u2019s, said his business lost revenue during construction.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe lost 35%, and we may have gained 20% back on that, but we\u2019re still at a loss from the construction. But hopefully now everything will be a lot better,\u201d Agramonte said.<\/p>\n
Susie Busch-Transou, founder and CEO of Hearth and Soul, said the reopening marks a significant moment for the district.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reopening of the road is a huge, huge aspect to celebrate. We thank the city and the contractor for pushing the timeline up, and we are so excited to celebrate,\u201d Busch-Transou said.<\/p>\n
Business owners said the work now is focused on winning back customers lost during construction.<\/p>\n
Busch-Transou said the district offers a variety of businesses in a central location.<\/p>\n
\u201cGreat neighbors, retailers that are offering really unique and different things here to the community in a very centralized place. If you think about it, we\u2019re really a community hub for Tallahassee,\u201d Busch-Transou said.<\/p>\n
Several businesses in the Market District are marking the reopening with an all-access block party Thursday, featuring live music, food specials and extended hours across the district.<\/p>\n
Agramonte said his message to the community is to support local businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cStay local, shop local, eat local, be local,\u201d Agramonte said.<\/p>\n
