{"id":387707,"date":"2026-09-02T00:24:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T00:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/387707\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T00:24:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T00:24:16","slug":"miccosukee-tribe-of-indians-opens-new-service-plaza-off-tamiami-trail-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/387707\/","title":{"rendered":"Miccosukee Tribe of Indians opens new service plaza off Tamiami Trail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Published:\u00a0September 1, 2026 at 1:59 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text--small text--normal text--primary\">Updated:\u00a0September 1, 2026 at 7:25 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla.  \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/miccosukee-tribe-history\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/miccosukee-tribe-history\/\">Miccosukee Tribe of Indians<\/a> opened a new service plaza with a gas station, food court, and store on Tuesday in western Miami-Dade County. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/09\/01\/tribu-indigena-miccosukee-inaugura-nueva-area-de-servicio-junto-a-alligator-alley\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/09\/01\/tribu-indigena-miccosukee-inaugura-nueva-area-de-servicio-junto-a-alligator-alley\/\">Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The plaza is off the Tamiami Trail at 36340 SW 8th St., west of the Miccosukee Casino &amp; Resort and east of the Miccosukee Indian Village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The service plaza also has some educational elements on exhibit, including a large taxidermied alligator that used to roam freely in the deep Florida Everglades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important for people to know about the tribe because we are the stewards of the Everglades. It\u2019s actually our constitutional duty to protect this land, but we can\u2019t do it alone,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/miccosukee-tribe-history\/william-j-osceola-secretary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/miccosukee-tribe-history\/william-j-osceola-secretary\/\">William J. Osceola<\/a>, a tribal leader known as \u201cPopeye.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Osceola, a former Miccosukee Indian School teacher, serves as the secretary of the tribe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/news\/elected-miccosukee-business-council-set-for-official-inauguration-ceremony\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/miccosukee.com\/news\/elected-miccosukee-business-council-set-for-official-inauguration-ceremony\/\">business council<\/a>, which oversees resource development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe invite visitors to come visit us and learn about us &#8230; and see how they can protect this land, which is also theirs,\u201d Osceola, 37, said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The tribe also has a service plaza in Broward County, off Alligator Alley at Exit 49.
