Hurley, Jr, K.M.

 OBITUARY

Jack passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025, after suffering from a long illness. Jack was born and raised in Lowell, MA, to John J. Hurley, Sr., and Clara Hurley. After graduating from Keith Academy, Jack went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from St. Anselm College and a Master of Science in Professional Accounting and Business Administration from Northeastern University.

After graduation, he moved to New York to work for Arthur Anderson for several years before returning home to Lowell in 1972 to join his father’s accounting firm, John J. Hurley & Co., CPA’s, a regional accounting firm with a number of large international clients. He eventually succeeded his father as managing partner, continuing to grow the firm, and in 1987, Jack successfully merged Hurley & Co. into KPMG and became a Partner in the firm, specializing in Audit and European & Middle East clients for its Boston office. After retiring from KPMG, Jack continued working, first as CFO for a computer manufacturing startup, and finally as a partner at the accounting firm Finn, Warnke, & Gayton in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

In addition to Jack’s professional career, he was active in the Massachusetts Society of CPAs as a member and eventually chairman. He was a member of the Board of Overseers at Northeastern University and of the Corporation. He volunteered and supported the Home for Little Wanderers, Beantown Softball League, the Huntington Theater Group, and the Archives for Historical Documentation, among other charities and non-profits. In addition to volunteering both his time and energy, Jack also set up scholarships in his parents’ names at both Northeastern University and St. Anselm College. Jack had been active as a member of the congregation first at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston for over twenty-five years and for the past 15 years at St John the Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale.

One of Jack’s proudest accomplishments was being invested as a Knight of Malta (Sovereign Military Order of Malta), following in his father’s footsteps. Jack was active in the Order for many years, and his only regret was never having gone on one of Malta’s pilgrimages to Lourdes.

In 2010, Jack moved from Boston to Fort Lauderdale after suffering a severe illness, forcing an early retirement. Even after retiring, Jack continued to do consulting work for many years.

Jack is survived by his partner of thirty-three years, Kenneth Berry; his sister Ann Marie Hurley of Lowell, MA; his brother William Neil Hurley and wife Barbara of Tewksbury, MA; his sister-in-law Kit Dorrier of Washington, D.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Frank L. Hurley of Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack’s name to the Golden Rescue of South Florida ( https://www.goldenrescuesouthflorida.com/donate), as Jack’s several golden retrievers provided endless love and devotion to him over their lifetimes.

A memorial Mass will be held for Jack at 10:00 AM on November 11, 2025, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Lowell, Massachusetts.

John “Jack” J.
