POMPANO BEACH, Fla. \u2014 A sex offender who authorities said was arrested three times for lewd behavior on the New York City subway now faces disturbing allegations in South Florida.<\/p>\n
A 36-year-old man booked under the name Jose Kamruzzaman was taken into custody on Thursday in connection with the Feb. 27 incident at the Islamic Center of South Florida, a mosque at 1641 NW 15th St. in Pompano Beach.<\/p>\n
According to the Broward Sheriff\u2019s Office, security guards at the mosque called deputies after seeing a man later, identified as Kamruzzaman, of Boca Raton, engaging in \u201codd\u201d behavior with a group of girls who were walking outside \u2015 namely, Kamruzzaman picking one of them up. <\/p>\n
A report states that the girls told one guard they didn\u2019t know Kamruzzaman, whom the guards also confronted, trying to get his identification. Deputies said he instead took off in his car, but the guards were able to snap a photo of his license plate.<\/p>\n
According to BSO, video showed Kamruzzaman beckoning one of the girls over and lifting her up. Deputies said he inappropriately touched two girls during the encounter. Their ages weren\u2019t specified, but at least one was under 12, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said they were able to trace the vehicle to Kamruzzaman, who had it registered under No Name Given Kamruzzaman. Deputies said in the report that Kamruzzaman only had one name, so it\u2019s unclear whether \u201cJose\u201d is a legal name, a nickname or a placeholder.<\/p>\n
The New York Police Department has referred to Kamruzzaman as \u201cFnu Kamruzzaman\u201d – \u201cFnu\u201d standing for \u201cfirst name unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t even know his first name,\u201d a Broward prosecutor said in court Friday.<\/p>\n
According to BSO, Kamruzzaman has had at least three run-ins with the NYPD for lewd subway behavior.<\/p>\n
In 2014, they said he was arrested for \u201crubbing himself against a 15-year-old girl on a train.\u201d<\/p>\n
In August 2017, police said he rubbed himself against an off-duty female police officer on a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens, then \u201cexposed himself,\u201d then got off at a stop and fled before being captured in the Sunnyside neighborhood.<\/p>\n
Then, in 2021, he was accused of \u201cmasturbating in front of a woman\u201d on an E train.<\/p>\n
Kamruzzaman, now facing Broward charges of lewd and lascivious conduct and lewd and lascivious molestation, was ordered held without bond.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s also behind bars on an immigration hold. His nationality wasn\u2019t clear; arrest documents list his place of birth as Queens, which a prosecutor said in court was \u201cclearly not accurate,\u201d given that he has a final deportation order.<\/p>\n
