Travelers face higher fuel, airfare, and hotel costs this year, while domestic cruise prices trend lower.

“Labor Day has long been a popular time for a final summer getaway, and travelers continue to prioritize vacations with family and friends,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA-The Auto Club Group, in a release. “Whether it’s a cruise, a national park adventure, or an international trip, travelers are eager to make the most of the holiday weekend.”

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, expects the heaviest congestion to occur Thursday and Friday as holiday travelers share the road with regular commuter traffic.

AAA officials said unlike longer holiday periods, Labor Day travel is often concentrated into a shorter window, resulting in significant congestion as holiday travelers mix with normal commuter traffic.

AAA encourages motorists to depart early, allow extra travel time, and avoid afternoon departures whenever possible.

While it’s difficult to predict where gas prices will be on Labor Day weekend, AAA officials said current market trends suggest motorists could pay more than they did a year ago. The national average price of gasoline on Labor Day 2025 was $3.19 per gallon.

“Crude oil, which accounts for roughly half the price consumers pay for gasoline, remains more expensive than it was a year ago,” AAA officials state. “Energy analysts also point to strong refinery demand and relatively low crude oil inventories as factors that continue to support higher fuel prices. For travelers planning a road trip, fuel costs are likely to be another expense to factor into their holiday vacation budget.”

Here in Southwest Florida, Lee County Government is continuing robust restoration efforts at its beachfront locations on Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach while encouraging residents and visitors to plan ahead for parking after Labor Day and into season.

Beginning Sept. 8, several Lee County Parks & Recreation beach parks will launch projects to restore and replace Hurricane Ian-damaged amenities such as restrooms, boardwalks and parking lots. The county is starting now because the rigorous process to obtain federal funding reimbursement for these projects has come through, meaning local taxpayer dollars do not have to be used.

Projects are taking place on at multiple locations on Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach.

Officials state most projects are expected to take 11 months to complete, but that beaches will remain open throughout the projects.

“The county is committed to providing progress updates as they become available,” Lee County officials stated. “The county thanks residents and visitors for their patience as work occurs at county sites.”

For updates on the construction and completion of Lee County’s beach projects and other Lee County Parks & Recreation projects, visit the Parks Project Information Tool at leegov.com/parks.

For travelers choosing to drive, vehicle preparation remains critical.

During last year’s Labor Day holiday period, AAA responded to more than 400,000 roadside assistance calls for common issues, including dead batteries, flat tires, lockouts, and towing.

Before leaving, drivers should:

• Check tire pressure and tread

• Test the battery

• Inspect fluid levels

• Pack water, snacks, and emergency supplies

• Carry a flashlight and jumper cables

Millions of Americans, and countless across Southwest Florida, are expected to spend the long weekend on the water.

America’s Boating Club United States Power Squadrons urges boaters to make safety a priority so everyone can enjoy the holiday and return home safely.

“Labor Day weekend is a great time to enjoy boating with family and friends, but it is also one of the busiest weekends of the boating season,” said America’s Boating Club Chief Commander Mike Wiedel in a release. “A little preparation and good judgment can prevent an enjoyable day on the water from becoming a tragedy.”

Officials state boaters should also consider having their vessels checked before heading out.
