It\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve seen him,\u201d says the director as he pulls Bloom even closer. It\u2019s Wednesday evening, and we\u2019re on the terrace of the Gritti hotel, with the Basilica della Salute across the way and a glimpse of the Grand Canal opening up toward Punta della Dogana. It\u2019s the first Cartier Cinema Club event, hosted by Vanity Fair in honor of Bucking Fastard, Herzog\u2019s film in competition at the Venice Film Festival, starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/topic\/kate-mara\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/topic\/rooney-mara\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rooney Mara<\/a>, Bloom, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/topic\/domhnall-gleeson\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Domhnall Gleeson<\/a>. Its premiere is Thursday at the Lido, but before the highly anticipated screening, there\u2019s a sunset toast with the cast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The first to arrive is the 83-year-old German director. He\u2019s wearing a tuxedo. \u201cRight now I was supposed to be in the Sala Grande,\u201d for the festival\u2019s opening ceremony, \u201cbut I slipped right out the backdoor after walking the red carpet with Alberto Barbera, film critic and director of the Venice Film Festival. But he knew\u2014I\u2019d told him just before: \u2018I\u2019ll walk the red carpet as your mascot, but then I\u2019ll disappear right away,\u2019\u201d Herzog tells Vanity Fair before adding that he \u201cslipped away with a paparazzo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Herzog is excited about Thursday\u2014after all, the last time he was in the festival\u2019s main competition was 17 years ago, and last year, he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. \u201cI want tomorrow to come, for it to arrive,\u201d he says.
