As we approach the 2026 king tide season, we are preparing for the annual high tides that temporarily flood our lowest-lying neighborhoods.”

This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts king tides on at least 40 days, reflecting how seasonal high-water levels are becoming a regular part of our coastal reality, the mayor added.

Trantalis’ alert listed the dates of the upcoming king tides: Sept. 10-13; Sept. 26 to Oct. 1; Oct. 7–13; Oct. 24–31; Nov. 5–11; Nov. 22–28; Dec. 24–25.

In addition to those dates, flooding can occur outside of official forecast windows if local tides rise higher due to rain, wind strength and direction, and high water tables, the mayor noted.

“Be aware of the high tides each day and plan your travel accordingly,” Trantalis said. “Never walk or drive through flooded streets. Saltwater causes severe, corrosive damage to vehicles and driving through flooded roads can push water into adjacent private properties. If a street floods, please ensure storm drains are clear of debris and move your waste collection carts to a safe location after they are emptied to prevent blockages.”

To report impassable roadways, unusual flooding or clogged storm drains, the mayor urges residents to contact the city’s Customer Support Center at 954-828-8000, report the issue on fortlauderdale.gov/fixitftl or use the FixIt FTL mobile app.

Susannah Bryan can be reached at sbryan@sunsentinel.com.
