MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. \u2014 A cargo plane overshot Miami International Airport\u2019s runway 30 on Sunday afternoon and crashed into a van, a fence, a sports utility vehicle, and a second fence, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.<\/p>\n
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said the Boeing 767-300 on Prime Air Flight 798 for Amazon struck a white 2012 Ford E-150 Econoline van inside MIA and a Toyota Corolla Cross LE that was on Northwest 67th Avenue outside of MIA. <\/p>\n
Homendy said there were seven workers in the Econoline van belonging to the Professional Ocean Service Corp., which she described as a cleaning company that operates on planes at MIA. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe recovery of victims is most important,\u201d Homendy said. <\/p>\n
Five people died, and five were injured, including three whose condition was critical. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said deputies were working to identify the victims. <\/p>\n
Homendy said the five dead were in the vehicles. The Econoline van, she said, was \u201ctorn apart.\u201d <\/p>\n
Antonio Cesar Hespanhol, a vice president at Professional Ocean Service who was in Chile, said some of the company\u2019s employees were among the dead, but he had not confirmed how many. <\/p>\n
The Boeing 767-300, manufactured in 1994, had departed with two crew members from San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB. <\/p>\n
A witness\u2019s video shows there were stormy clouds when the plane landed on the runway shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday. Homendy said the plane traveled for 1,300 feet past the paved surface. <\/p>\n
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 60 units. Dark smoke billowed from the crash site. Firefighters reported using foam to help extinguish the flames in the engine compartment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a very complex fire,\u201d Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raied \u201cRay\u201d Jadallah said on Sunday. <\/p>\n
Jadallah said firefighters rescued the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped in the cockpit. Rohan Ellis, a witness, shared a video showing them getting out through a window. <\/p>\n
Fire rescue personnel took the injured to Jackson Memorial Hospital\u2019s Ryder Trauma Center and the Jackson South Medical Center. <\/p>\n
Homendy said the crash site was still not safe on Monday afternoon. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere is fuel everywhere. That will have to be remediated, but then they are also removing fuel from the aircraft, so we have to allow that to occur,\u201d Homendy said. <\/p>\n
Two of Miami International Airport\u2019s four runways remained closed on Monday afternoon, according to Greg Chin, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. <\/p>\n
Homendy asked witnesses to share photos and videos with the NTSB team via e-mail at witness@ntsb.gov.<\/p>\n
