{"id":393565,"date":"2026-09-08T10:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T10:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/393565\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T10:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T10:42:08","slug":"ocps-begins-enforcing-e-bike-policy-after-grace-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/393565\/","title":{"rendered":"OCPS begins enforcing e-bike policy after grace period"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 Orange County Public Schools is beginning enforcement of its new e-bike policy after a 30-day grace period, restricting electric bikes and scooters on school campuses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">The policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/mynews13.com\/fl\/orlando\/news\/2026\/07\/29\/orange-county-school-board-passes-ban-on-e-bikes-e-scooters-for-elementary-middle-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">which was approved in late July<\/a>, prohibits electric devices on school campuses for all students except high school students with a license or permit. Those students must register the device, apply for a decal from their school and follow the rules of the road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">An OCPS spokesperson said principals have reported fewer students bringing electric devices to campus since the policy was approved. School board member Stephanie Vanos said she has noticed more traditional bikes in bike racks at schools and has not heard of issues from principals in her district.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">She said that while she&#8217;s heard from some parents asking the School Board to reconsider, most of the feedback has been positive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">&#8220;The vast majority of feedback that I received from people in my community was really just in support of the policy, because they have seen sort of what&#8217;s happening with students on the bikes and on the e-bikes and e-scooters,&#8221; Vanos said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Vanos said possible consequences for violations include a warning, a referral under the code of student conduct, contacting parents or an in-school suspension.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cI don&#8217;t have serious concern that we will get to a place where people are violating this multiple days in a row,\u201d Vanos said. \u201cThere will be plenty of warnings, plenty of consequences, so that it&#8217;s not going to result in a holding of the device until a parent can come pick it up.
