TAMPA, Fla (WFLA) — The deadly cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport is having ripple effects across Florida.<\/p>\n
Officials say at least five people were killed and several others injured Sunday, after a Boeing 767 Amazon Air cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport.<\/p>\n
The plane crossed an airport road, hitting multiple vehicles, before bursting into flames.\u00a0<\/p>\n
More than 60 fire rescue units and nearly 200 personnel responded.<\/p>\n
The crash shut down Miami’s runways disrupting hundreds of flights and forcing some arriving planes to divert elsewhere.<\/p>\n
That impact stretched all the way to Tampa.<\/p>\n
Tampa International Airport tells 8 On Your Side it took 12 diverted flights following the crash.<\/p>\n
TPA says of those flights, eight were domestic, three were international and one was a cargo flight.<\/p>\n
Two of the four runways at Miami International Airport have since reopened, but the investigation is just beginning.<\/p>\n
Many are wondering what caused this to happen.<\/p>\n
“There are a lot of things to look at here, but starting with pilot error is certainly one of them,” said Aviation expert and Clifford Law founder, Robert Clifford.<\/p>\n
Robert Clifford tells us that he believes the investigation should start with the pilots.<\/p>\n
“I’d really like to know what they were thinking about, but there had to be a reason,” Clifford said.<\/p>\n
“Now, maybe he couldn’t take off. Why didn’t he abort? Well, maybe there was a big storm. It’s been storming all over Miami, all over Florida.”<\/p>\n
Federal investigators are now looking at what happened during the landing.<\/p>\n
They’re expected to focus on if the landing was beyond the normal touchdown zone and why the pilots did not circle back for another attempt.<\/p>\n
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.<\/p>\n
Amazon released a statement expressing condolences to those impacted.<\/p>\n
