International students enrollment at FIU is facing a possible decrease due to growing challenges surrounding student visas. In the past year, changes to immigration policies and uncertainty over F-1 student visas are raising concerns about whether international students can continue their education in the U.S.

Since April, the Trump administration has taken actions affecting the legal status of some international students, adding to the uncertainty for students and universities. According to Inside Higher Ed, new student visas issued by the United States dropped 23% in 2025, with students from several countries facing increased difficulties.

As international enrollment faces uncertainty nationwide, the effects are being felt at Florida International University. Which has a large international student population of about 4,500 students.

Many international students are being affected by challenges both outside and within the university. Students have to pay extra fees.

“Negatively, there’s just extra fees going around that I didn’t account for,” said Daniel Nuñez, an international student from Venezuela who is getting his masters degree at FIU.

Some students also believe that lower international student enrollment has impacted FIU’s diversity and funding.

“With less international students they have less funding; less diversity going around the school,” added Nuñez.

Andres Felipe Leon a major in business analytics said “I think it’s a great source of income for the university and also it would be missing one of the main aspects of the university.a lot of people come from all over the country to here give a great perspective and great opportunity for kids to grow.”

Previously in 2024, FIU shut down its dual-degree hospitality program administered by the university’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in Tianjin, China. Without any announcement according to the Miami Herald. About 1,200 students attended that campus. According to inside Higher ed FIU closed the campus to “comply with a Florida state law restricting public universities from partnering from countries of concern.”

The campus was established in 2006 through a partnership between FIU and Tianjin University of Commerce to build on FIU’s Hospitality and Tourism management program. The program became a major profit center for FIU attracting full tuition paying Chinese students who often transferred to Miami for their final years. The campus also helped boost Miami’s reputation as a global hospitality hub; graduates worked in luxury hotels worldwide strengthening FIU’s international network. When the campus closed in 2024 FIU lost not only a source of revenue, but also a pathway for international student engagement.

Combined with the recent decline in student visas, the closure of FIU’s China campus both reflect the growing obstacles facing international education

As immigration policies continue to evolve and international enrollment remains uncertain, FIU faces challenges maintaining the global presence that has long been a part of its identity.
