JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 A Jacksonville man was arrested last week after a Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s officer clocked him driving 108 mph in a posted 65 mph zone on Interstate 295 South.<\/p>\n
According to his arrest report, the 22-year-old driver later admitted he was speeding because he was late for work.<\/p>\n
News4JAX is not naming the suspect because he was charged with misdemeanor. <\/p>\n
The traffic stop<\/p>\n
Just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 2, a JSO patrol officer was running stationary laser radar near the I-295 South and I-95 North interchange when he spotted a dark-colored GMC Yukon weaving between vehicles with dim headlights. The officer estimated the SUV was traveling around 105 mph before his laser device confirmed the vehicle\u2019s speed at 108 mph, according to JSO. <\/p>\n
The officer then conducted a traffic stop at the I-295 South and Philips Highway off-ramp.<\/p>\n
The arrest<\/p>\n
The driver was removed from the vehicle, placed in handcuffs and transported in the officer\u2019s patrol vehicle. Officers read him his Miranda rights, which he verbally acknowledged.<\/p>\n
After waiving those rights, the driver admitted to traveling at 108 mph, telling officers he was running late for work.<\/p>\n
He was charged with operating a motor vehicle at 100 mph or more in a manner that threatens persons or property \u2014 a second-degree misdemeanor. <\/p>\n
Florida\u2019s \u201cSuper Speeder\u201d law makes driving 50 mph or more over the speed limit, or hitting 100 mph or more while threatening safety, a criminal misdemeanor rather than a standard traffic ticket<\/p>\n
The sentence<\/p>\n
The case was heard in Duval County court before Judge Brooke Brady on Sept. 2. The driver entered a plea and was placed on six months of probation.<\/p>\n
As part of the sentence, the judge ordered the driver to complete a street racing awareness course within 30 days, perform 25 hours of community service at five hours per month beginning immediately, pay $250 in fines plus court costs and fees, and report to probation within 24 hours of release.<\/p>\n
