A $4 million Series B extension, paired with a fast‑moving community investment round, signals both investor confidence and a widening circle of stakeholders who want in on the Miami-based company’s mission: Using AI to transform frontline skin‑cancer detection.

The new capital announced today follows DermaSensor’s $16 million Series B closed in 2025, bringing total investment to $48 million. Alongside institutional and strategic investors, the company opened a round on Wefunder, giving physicians, patients, and others the chance to invest $250 or more at the same terms as the extension. Just over $1 million has already flowed in, the company reports, bringing the total raised in the extension to $5 million.

“Our professional investor partners have supported us through every phase of building this new medical device category. Opening the financing on Wefunder is about extending that ownership to the physicians and patients who are living the problem we’re solving, given that 1 in 5 Americans are affected by skin cancer,. We want the people closest to it to have a seat at the table,” said Cody Simmons, Co-Founder and CEO of DermaSensor.

The company is also betting that democratizing ownership could accelerate engagement and adoption of DermaSensor’s skin cancer-detection tech. “If we have a thousand micro-investors talking to their doctors about the device, that could be really powerful,” Simmons said in an interview with Refresh Miami. Indeed, increasing awareness has been a challenge because there are so many primary care doctors, he said.

Perhaps even bigger news is that DermaSensor recently closed four major new partnerships designed to put its FDA-cleared AI-powered skin cancer detection technology in the hands of more primary care, enterprise healthcare, and federal systems in the United States.

A partnership with “one of the largest health systems in the country” (the name wasn’t disclosed) will give tens of thousands of providers across the U.S. the ability to deploy DermaSensor, with two divisions already implementing devices this year, Simmons said.

Under a second partnership with Henry Schein, DermaSensor now sits inside the procurement channels of the world’s largest provider of healthcare solutions to office‑based practitioners. That means streamlined access for thousands of clinics nationwide, according to DermaSensor.

A MedTech MedCare (MTMC) commercial partnership, with more than 150 sales representatives across acute, post‑acute, and ambulatory care, gives DermaSensor national field coverage. The rollout began in Texas and is expanding to additional states.

✓

Check your inbox for a confirmation email.

And through its Medical Place VA reseller partnership, DermaSensor is an exclusive reseller to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, opening a pathway into one of the country’s largest integrated healthcare systems. Veterans, who experience skin cancer at three times the national rate, represent a critical population for early detection.

Together, these four partnerships dramatically expand the company’s footprint. Simmons calls them “an important milestone” in the commercialization strategy, positioning DermaSensor to reach millions of patients.

“Our goal is to achieve $100 million ARR in 2031,” Simmons said. “We could already be to more than half of that goal just with the partners we already have.”

DermaSensor’s device uses Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) technology combined with AI to deliver an immediate, objective risk assessment for suspicious lesions. In published studies, the device demonstrated 96% sensitivity across melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, while reducing missed skin‑cancer referrals by more than 50%.

“We are going to look back a decade from now and say ‘remember how primitive primary care was when it came to skin cancer?’,” said Simmons, who co-founded the company with Maurice Ferre. “Primary care doctors testing for skin cancer will be the new normal.”

DermaSensor began its commercial launch two years ago, and the device is already used by hundreds of healthcare organizations and has scanned more than 45,000 lesions. DermaSensor’s team now numbers about 20 full-time employees plus contractors, and the company has a few positions open including a channel partner account manager.

DermaSensor is part of Miami’s growing hub for health innovation, where AI, biotech, and clinical care increasingly intersect. Indeed, medtech companies make up Miami tech’s second most active sector for venture capital, just behind fintech.

The company’s next phase will test how quickly its device can become the standard in frontline care, positioning DermaSensor as a national force in early skin cancer detection.

TUNE IN: Hear DermaSensor’s origin story, see a demo and more as CEO Cody Simmons joins Refresh Miami CEO Maria Derchi in a recent podcast.

I am a writer and editor with extensive media experience and a passion for journalism and serving the community.
