After years of planning, construction delays and rising costs, Fort Lauderdale officially opened the doors to its new police headquarters, a massive facility city leaders say will transform how the department investigates crime, trains officers and serves the community.<\/p>\n
The new three-story headquarters on Broward Boulevard spans approximately 191,000 square feet and replaces the department’s aging former facility with a modern building designed to support everything from complex criminal investigations to officer training and emergency operations.<\/p>\n
Inside the new facility are specialized spaces that Fort Lauderdale police officials say were simply not available in the department’s previous headquarters.<\/p>\n
The building includes evidence laboratories, training rooms and a shooting range, along with technology designed to help investigators process and analyze critical evidence.<\/p>\n
Police Chief Bill Schultz pointed to the department’s expanded forensic capabilities, including technology used to analyze ballistic evidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have NIBIN, which reads the ballistics of shells from casings spent,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cThe things that we have in this building would have never been available in our old facility.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the building’s specialized rooms is a secure space designed for examining electronic devices, including cell phones, laptops and computers.<\/p>\n
Beyond its law enforcement technology, the new headquarters was designed with South Florida’s extreme weather in mind.<\/p>\n
City officials say the building is rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, providing the police department with a hardened facility capable of continuing operations during the most severe emergencies.<\/p>\n
Mayor Dean Trantalis said the building will become a central hub for the department and the community it serves.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers will report to duty here. Detectives will work cases here. Our professional staff will build careers here,\u201d Trantalis said. \u201cOur residents will come here when they need help.\u201d<\/p>\n
The opening comes seven years after Fort Lauderdale voters approved a $100 million bond to help build the new police headquarters.<\/p>\n
But the project ultimately cost significantly more.<\/p>\n
The final price tag reached approximately $165 million, following years of delays and design changes.<\/p>\n
During construction, a significant design flaw was discovered in 2024 that city officials said required repairs and corrections.<\/p>\n
Asked about the project’s delays and escalating costs, Trantalis acknowledged that construction projects can encounter unexpected problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat happens in every project,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cWe understand that. We anticipate \u2014 it’s built in the contract that there might be shortcomings in design and construction \u2014 but the reality is that we’re addressing them. They’ll be taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite those challenges, city leaders say the focus now is on what the completed building will mean for Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n
A new home for police \u2014 and a resource for the community<\/p>\n
The headquarters is more than just office space for police officers and detectives.<\/p>\n
City officials envision the building as a facility where officers can train, investigators can process evidence and residents can seek help and access services.<\/p>\n
Chief Schultz said the building represents an investment in the future of the department.<\/p>\n
\u201cInside these walls, we will protect victims, solve crimes, train the next generation of officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The new headquarters will also include space intended for public use.
