CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)\u2014 Cape Coral police shot a man Tuesday after they say he pointed a gun at officers following a disturbance at a home.<\/p>\n
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the situation started around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, when someone called 911 to report a man armed with a gun and a knife kicking in the front door of a home in the 1400 block of NE 10th Terrace.<\/p>\n
A resident inside the home also called 911 to report the same thing, saying a family member had kicked in the door.<\/p>\n
The man, identified as 43-year-old Daniel Eric Colon, was then seen leaving the scene on foot toward NE 15th Place with a gun in his hand.<\/p>\n
Officers set up a perimeter while Cape Coral police and Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies searched the area near NE 15th Place and NE 9th Terrace, focusing on a dumpster area behind the City Mattress at 915 NE 15th Place.<\/p>\n
During the search, Colon came out of nearby bushes pointing a black handgun directly at officers and deputies, according to the department.<\/p>\n
Two Cape Coral officers fired their weapons, hitting Colon.<\/p>\n

Officers immediately detained Colon and gave him emergency medical care on the scene until Lee County EMS arrived, then transported him to Gulf Coast Hospital, where he went into surgery.<\/p>\n
No officers or deputies were hurt. The two officers involved were placed on administrative leave, which the department says is standard procedure in situations like this.<\/p>\n
The suspect was found hiding beside a dumpster behind City Mattress. He emerged from a bush next to the dumpster, pulled a gun and pointed it at law enforcement.<\/p>\n
Two Cape Coral police officers fired their weapons and struck the suspect, Daniel\u00a0Eric Colone.\u00a0Officers detained him and provided medical aid before he was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center.<\/p>\n
