{"id":395693,"date":"2026-09-10T09:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T09:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/395693\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T09:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T09:56:09","slug":"another-part-of-tampas-historic-jackson-house-has-collapsed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/395693\/","title":{"rendered":"Another part of Tampa&#8217;s historic Jackson House has collapsed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part of the second-floor wall of the historic Jackson House collapsed on Monday, leaving a portion of the interior exposed. <\/p>\n<p>It marks just the latest damage to the century-old building, which has sat in disrepair for years, awaiting renovations. <\/p>\n<p>Built in 1901, <a href=\"https:\/\/jacksonhousefoundation.org\/index.html\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Jackson House<\/a>, served as a boarding house for African Americans during segregation. The Jackson family hosted famous individuals including Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and James Brown.<\/p>\n<p>It closed in 1989 and was designated a historical landmark.<\/p>\n<p>Plans to restore the building and turn it into a museum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/arts-culture\/2026-03-02\/tampas-jackson-house-could-reopen-as-a-museum-within-the-next-two-years\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have been delayed<\/a> partly because of disagreements between contractors and the Jackson House Foundation, the organization that owns the building.<\/p>\n<p>Strict requirements governing the restoration process have also prolonged repairs. <\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/arts-culture\/2026-06-12\/florida-matters-architect-transforming-tampa-jackson-house-take-longer\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">An architect on why renovating Tampa&#8217;s Jackson House will take longer than expected<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can\u2019t just tear it down and rebuild it because it has grant funding from the city, state, and the state governs the local National Register of Historic Places,&#8221; lead architect Jerel McCants told \u201cFlorida Matters Live &amp; Local\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/arts-culture\/2026-06-12\/florida-matters-architect-transforming-tampa-jackson-house-take-longer\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two-story, 24-room boarding house is the only remaining building from Tampa\u2019s oldest Black neighborhood, the Scrub.<\/p>\n<p>Fingerprints are etched into the plaster walls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/arts-culture\/2026-06-12\/florida-matters-architect-transforming-tampa-jackson-house-take-longer\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to one of the descendants<\/a> of the Jackson family.<\/p>\n<p>Community members are intent on preserving this part of Tampa history, but timing matters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusf.org\/arts-culture\/2025-08-07\/emergency-repairs-jackson-house-tampa-needed-before-restoration-can-begin\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Emergency repairs<\/a> had to be made in 2025 when the wood panels of the wall fell away. <\/p>\n<p>Weeks ago, the Tampa city council approved a $1 million grant for restoration efforts. <\/p>\n<p>Council member Bill Carlson told Spectrum Bay News 9 that remnants of the building should still be salvageable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They will have taken it completely apart, and then they&#8217;ll analyze which pieces can be saved and which ones can&#8217;t, and then they&#8217;ll rebuild it,&#8221; Carlson said. &#8220;Whatever state it&#8217;s in, as long as it has pieces that can be used, that will still work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McCants previously said restoration will likely take more than the initial goal of two years. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Part of the second-floor wall of the historic Jackson House collapsed on Monday, leaving a portion of the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":395694,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[135,137,136],"class_list":["post-395693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tampa","tag-tampa","tag-tampa-headlines","tag-tampa-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/395693","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=395693"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/395693\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/395694"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=395693"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=395693"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=395693"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
