Volunteers needed for UF\/IFAS Extension Sarasota County<\/p>\n

SARASOTA \u2014 The UF\/IFAS Extension Sarasota County is seeking volunteers to help with its Ecology and Natural Resources programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ecology and natural resources program reaches thousands of youth and adults across Sarasota County each year through engaging field and classroom-based education programs,\u201d it stated in a news release.<\/p>\n

It noted research shows volunteering \u201cimproves physical activity, self-reported wellness and mood\u201d when it comes to being in the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cVolunteering in nature with UF\/IFAS Extension Sarasota County offers an opportunity to make friends and build community with others who have similar values and interests while increasing your knowledge and skills,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n

EcoWalks, forest bathing walks setENGLEWOOD \u2014 Returning soon are EcoWalks that take place throughout Sarasota County.<\/p>\n

\u201cEcoWalks are guided interpretive walks through a Sarasota County park or preserve,\u201d according to a county news release. \u201cEcoWalks are awesome opportunities to learn more about the unique ecology of Sarasota County.\u201d<\/p>\n

EcoWalks take place in Sarasota, Englewood, Venice and North Port.<\/p>\n

\u201cForest Bathing walks offer participants the opportunity to practice mindfulness, breathwork, and use all of their senses to connect with nature,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n

Take a Child Outside set for Sept. 26<\/p>\n

VENICE \u2014 Sarasota County will celebrate National Public Lands Day from 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Shamrock Park.<\/p>\n

It will be \u201cthe nation\u2019s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands,\u201d according to a news release from the county.<\/p>\n

\u201cVolunteers of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in various activities, including litter pick-up, nuisance plant removal, native vegetation planting and mulching,\u201d the news release stated.<\/p>\n

After that, everyone will have a chance to enjoy the nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cCelebrate Take a Child Outside Week and explore Shamrock Park as you learn about the park\u2019s ecology and how your hard work benefits this ecosystem with family-friendly activities,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n

People can also stop by between 8:30-11 a.m. to learn about wildlife at Shamrock Park and play Agents of Discovery.<\/p>\n

Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz set<\/p>\n

PORT CHARLOTTE \u2014 Charlotte County Parks & Natural Resources hosts the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz event from 9 -11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, at Centennial Park Recreation Center, at 1120 Centennial Blvd., Port Charlotte.<\/p>\n

\u201cBees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators do more than brighten our parks\u2014they help sustain the natural world around us,\u201d it stated in a news release. \u201cThis free, family-friendly event will celebrate the vital role pollinators play in healthy ecosystems while encouraging residents of all ages to explore nature, learn about local wildlife and discover simple ways to support conservation at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

There will be interactive educational exhibits on pollinators and native plants, wildlife conservation along with sustainability and environmental stewardship, it stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlotte County Parks & Natural Resources is seeking nonprofit organizations, schools, environmental groups, and educational exhibitors to help bring the experience to life,\u201d it stated. \u201cVendor participation is free. This event is intended for educational and community outreach purposes only.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kayak launch improvements underway<\/p>\n

PORT CHARLOTTE \u2014 Officials announced improvements are underway to the natural kayak launch at Tippecanoe Environmental Park.<\/p>\n

The completion date was set for Aug. 31. Originally, it was anticipated to be opened July 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kayak launch will be closed during this time,\u201d it stated. \u201cThe remainder of the park will remain open.\u201d<\/p>\n

How to grow vegetables in Southwest Florida<\/p>\n

PORT CHARLOTTE \u2014 Just because the environment is a bit harsh doesn\u2019t mean vegetables can\u2019t be grown in Southwest Florida.<\/p>\n

The UF\/IFAS Extension Charlotte County Master Gardener volunteers is holding a workshop on how to \u201cmake the most of Southwest Florida\u2019s fall growing season at the Vegetable Gardening in Southwest Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n

It takes place at two upcoming events.<\/p>\n

From 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 12 at at Mid-County Regional Library, 4050 Forest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte.<\/p>\n

From 10 a.m.-noon, Friday, Sept. 18 at at Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Cente, 6961 San Casa Drive, Englewood.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresented by UF\/IFAS Extension Charlotte County Master Gardener Volunteers, the workshop will provide practical tips to help participants get their fall vegetable gardens off to a great start,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n

FREE GUIDED NATURE WALK<\/p>\n

CHARLOTTE HARBOR \u2014 The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center and the Charlotte County Natural Resource Department will be conducting free guided nature walks.<\/p>\n

All events begin at 8 a.m.<\/p>\n

On these casual walks with CHEC volunteers, you will search for and learn about the things that live in Charlotte County\u2019s wild places. Prepare for each walk with plenty of water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and clothing that will protect from insects and plants. Advance registration is required. Cedar Point holds wading trip<\/p>\n

ENGLEWOOD \u2014 Public wading trips are set through Cedar Point Environmental Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn these guided programs with local experts, you\u2019ll experience a short, guided hike through various ecosystems of the park, and then you will get to wade into the shallow waters of Lemon Bay and use dip nets to sample all the incredible wildlife that lives within the seagrass flats. Prepare for each trip with plenty of water, insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or avobenzone), and clothing comfortable both for hiking and being in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently, a dozen people are allowed per trip with waiting lists created.<\/p>\n
