ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Jawanza Sparks thought she had finally found the perfect work-from-home job. <\/p>\n
Weeks later, Orlando police were knocking on her door.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a box sitting on my porch with her name on it when the police pulled up. That\u2019s what triggered them to knock on the door,\u201d Sparks explained.<\/p>\n
Sparks says she had no idea why officers showed up, until they explained what had really been happening. \u201cI\u2019m like, whoa, wait a minute, for what?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
According to the Orlando Police Department, a woman had tracked a package purchased through her hacked Amazon account. That trail led police directly to Sparks\u2019 front door.<\/p>\n
Weeks earlier, Sparks had found a job posting on Indeed for a Salt Lake City-based shipping company called Freight Steward. The listing advertised a \u201cPackage Inspector\u201d position with a base salary of $4,300, plus a $20 bonus for every package shipped within three hours of receiving it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt felt so legit,\u201d Sparks said. \u201cI was just like, okay, yes, I finally got a job now.\u201d<\/p>\n
The job came with multiple managers to report to and training videos walking her through the work. Her duties: track incoming packages, photograph the contents, print a new shipping label, and send them back out from her local post office.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m thinking that the people are ordering from a website, it comes to me, and I send it out – I\u2019m checking it for any damages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
When packages began arriving, Sparks did exactly what she was hired to do. \u201cI did what was told. I took the pictures. And I went to UPS,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Among the items she received were a pair of Tiffany earrings worth nearly $3,000 and two boxes containing Xbox gaming consoles worth more than $2,000. <\/p>\n
Sparks did not know the merchandise was allegedly purchased using stolen credit card information.<\/p>\n
One box was addressed to a woman who lived down the street \u2014 the same woman whose Amazon account had been hacked. \u201cShe\u2019s in my neighborhood. I think that\u2019s how she was able to track it,\u201d Sparks said.<\/p>\n
Sparks says she was an unwitting participant. \u201cI was the middleman for that package,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
That is exactly how reshipping scams operate, companies use job seekers to receive and forward stolen merchandise, creating distance between the criminals running the operation and the stolen goods.<\/p>\n
Sparks is not alone. News 6 found more than 100 Freight Steward complaints on the Better Business Bureau from people across the country.<\/p>\n
News 6 attempted to reach Freight Steward with questions about its reshipping program, trying five different phone numbers. None were working.<\/p>\n
Indeed told News 6 it has strict policies against fraudulent job postings and removes listings that violate its rules. The company confirmed it removed all job postings associated with these complaints.<\/p>\n
Sparks explained the situation to police, who told her it was likely a job scam. She was never paid for the work she did.<\/p>\n
She says she is still worried about what the company may have done with the personal information she provided during the hiring process. \u201cI pray no one has bought a house in my name or opened up a bank account and it\u2019s negative a million dollars or something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Her experience has made her far more cautious about future job offers. \u201cI would like a work from home. Maybe like a data entry,\u201d she said \u2014 but now with a much closer eye on who is really doing the hiring.<\/p>\n
