As part of a water system disinfection process, the city is temporarily switching its water to chlorine until Oct. 5.<\/p>\n

TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 The Tampa Water Department will temporarily switch its water disinfection process during routine system maintenance starting Monday.<\/p>\n

City officials say the department will use chlorine instead of monochloramine \u2014 a mix of ammonia and chlorine \u2014 to help maintain water quality through service lines and water mains. The process will last until Monday, Oct. 5.<\/p>\n

“This is a routine measure that is practiced throughout the Tampa Bay region, and by other public water systems around the country,” Tampa wrote in its announcement.<\/p>\n

Pinellas County is also making this change<\/a> to its water treatment beginning one week later.<\/p>\n

While the water will remain safe to drink and use during the temporary change, some customers who are sensitive to chlorine may notice a stronger smell or taste.<\/p>\n

To minimize potential effects of chlorine-impacted water, the Tampa Water Department recommends the following:<\/p>\n

Run the tap for a few minutes before using or drinking the water.Fill a pitcher and let the water sit for several hours to allow any residual chlorine to dissipate.Consider using a carbon filter on kitchen or bathroom faucets and showerheads. <\/p>\n

The department also recommends replacing already-existing water filters with new ones.<\/p>\n

People who already take steps to remove chloramine from tap water, such as dialysis patients and aquatic pet owners, should take extra precautions during the temporary change to chlorine, according to the department. Pinellas County utility officials also emphasized this in their announcement.<\/p>\n
