Fort Lauderdale has officially opened its new $165 million police headquarters, completing a long-awaited project seven years after voters approved funding for the facility.<\/p>\n
The new three-story headquarters on Broward Boulevard spans approximately 191,000 square feet and replaces the police department\u2019s aging former facility.<\/p>\n
City officials say the building will significantly expand the department\u2019s ability to investigate crimes, train officers and maintain operations during major emergencies while also providing new spaces for the public.<\/p>\n
The headquarters includes evidence laboratories, training rooms and a shooting range, as well as technology designed to help investigators process and analyze evidence.<\/p>\n
Police Chief Bill Schultz highlighted the department\u2019s expanded forensic capabilities, including technology that allows investigators to analyze ballistic evidence.<\/p>\n
The facility also includes a secure space dedicated to examining electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops and computers, providing investigators with resources that were not available at the department\u2019s previous headquarters.<\/p>\n
The building was also designed to withstand South Florida\u2019s severe weather. City officials say the headquarters is rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, allowing the police department to continue critical operations during major storms and other emergencies.<\/p>\n
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said the facility is expected to serve as a central hub for both the police department and the wider community.<\/p>\n
The headquarters includes space for public use, including a community center. City officials said the facility will also host city commission meetings while Fort Lauderdale\u2019s new city hall is under construction.<\/p>\n
The opening follows years of planning, construction delays, design changes and rising costs.<\/p>\n

The facility is expected to bring several police functions under one roof, providing space for officers to train, investigators to process evidence and members of the public to access services.<\/p>\n
