Step back in time with a unique musical and film perspective inside the lives of the infamous rock \u2018n\u2019 roll duo Don and Phil Everly in Florida Repertory Theatre\u2019s production of \u201cForever Everly: The Everly Brothers Rockumentary\u201d. Defining the sound of a generation, this brotherly duo known for their hallmark harmonies, the production features the known hits, those hits influenced by these two artists, while delving into the brothers\u2019 lives through iconic film footage, storytelling and live music.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cHonoring the real, unvarnished history of Don and Phil Everly, \u201cForever Everly\u201d allows the audiences to understand the emotional weight, the triumphs and the fractures behind the music, making the live performances of songs like \u2018Bye Bye Love\u2019 cut much deeper,\u201d Greg Longenhagen, producing artistic director of Florida Repertory Theatre, said. \u201cAudiences will be treated to the Everly brothers\u2019 greatest hits, including \u2018Wake up Little Suzy\u2019, \u2018Cathy\u2019s Clown\u2019, \u2018Let It Be Me\u2019, \u2018All I Have to Do Is Dream,\u2019 and many more.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u2018Forever Everly\u2019 launches Florida Repertory Theatre\u2019s 29th season on Sept. 15 with a burst of infectious energy, pulling patrons out of their summer entertainment lull and setting a vibrant, innovative tone for the entire year, Longenhagen believes.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cOpening a season requires a high-energy production that sparks joy and immediate conversation,\u201d Longenhagen reflects. \u201cWe were instantly captivated by the sheer brilliance of the Everly Brothers\u2019 vocal arrangements and the distinct way this show honors them. We\u2019ve been looking for an Everly Brothers show for several years and we found the one that will knock the socks of Southwest Florida audiences.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Finding a production that replicates the Everly Brothers\u2019 tight, iconic two-part close harmonies is rare, according to Longenhagen.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile nostalgia is a powerful magnet, \u2018Forever Everly\u2019 is unique because it isn\u2019t passive,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt belongs in Florida Rep\u2019s 29th season because our audiences demand high-caliber musicality and storytelling. This script seamlessly marries elite live instrumentation with a deeply moving narrative about brotherhood and fame.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The show is truly an experience blending film and live music, taking audiences into the lives, struggles and high moments of Don and Phil Everly, one of the country\u2019s most influential musical duos.\n<\/p>\n

More than a\u00a0tribute show<\/p>\n

Both Gallardo and Mancuso created \u2018Forever Everly\u2019 in 2022, but have been working together for over a decade, which was helpful when recreating the brothers\u2019 sound for the show.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cJared and I have been fortunate to have worked with each other for over 10 years now. We know each other\u2019s idiosyncrasies; we\u2019re like brothers,\u201d Gallardo believes. \u201cWe\u2019ve honed our voices to create the iconic Everly sound and are excited to share it with you.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Gallardo reflects on how this style of show \u2013 a rockumentary \u2013 adds something unexpected and fresh to classic tunes.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI think adding in the documentary element really brings our\u00a0show to a new level. I also think this show is special because we not only highlight the best of the Everly Brothers, but we also reveal a lot of the strong musical influence they had over other artists. You may be surprised to see the superstars they inspired,\u201d he believes.\n<\/p>\n

When rehearsing for this show, since it combines a documentary style genre with live music, Gallardo explains there were nuances in preparation as it\u2019s more than a tribute band performance.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a little different pausing for documentary breaks, but when the documentary aspect is combined with our live performance, it creates something special,\u201d he explained. \u201cA live story book, if you will.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Having the documentary as part of the production changes a lot for the creators of the show, who are also performing the songs in their audience interaction.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWith our other shows, there\u2019s a lot of interacting with the audience throughout the show. Lots of \u2018are you having a good time\u2019 and jokes and bits. But with this, the documentary (narrated by Allison Kelly) does almost all of the speaking for us,\u201d Mancuso described. \u201cWhen we first created it, we worried that there would be a disconnect between us and the audience, but it didn\u2019t. The documentary really pulls people into the story of the brothers, giving context for everything, and then we pick up from there and perform the songs live.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The two things combined really allow the audience to get lost in it in a way Mancuso says he hasn\u2019t with other tributes. \u201cWe also get asked how we created the show a lot, and I think that interest in the craft of it all is something that stands out to people,\u201d he adds.\n<\/p>\n

Gallardo continues that he is honored to perform these songs. \u201cIt\u2019s always fun seeing the reaction in the audience when we play the hits, but there a few deep cuts that really leave the room quiet in wonder. \u2018Silver-haired Daddy\u2019 is an especially touching song,\u201d Gallardo added.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally enjoy performing \u2018Cathy\u2019s Clown\u2019. The song itself is just so iconic, the harmonies are fun, but then we bring in a fun element at that point in the show that really wows the audience,\u201d Mancuso said.\n<\/p>\n

Behind the harmonies, a story of brotherhood<\/p>\n

The rockumentary not only celebrates the Everly hits, but the production also dives into the relationships of the brothers and musical partners.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that first and foremost, Don and Phil were brothers. They grew up (beside each other) and learned to work as a unit before being given the opportunity to explore solo careers,\u201d Gallardo reflects. \u201cThey were better together. The fact that they were able to stay relevant through years of change, distraction and musical politics gives us extra passion and respect for the brothers.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Don and Phil being brothers adds an extra layer of pressure to make it work because family was on the line, Mancuso believes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs folks will see in the show, they certainly did have a complicated relationship. In that era, the dawn of all of this kind of music, we saw a lot of those artists struggle with substance abuse, personal dramas, and exploitative practices from a music business that was also figuring out how this uncharted territory of popular music was impacting the world as\u00a0new artists like Buddy Holly, Paul Anka, Elvis, Ritchie Valens, The Beatles, The Kinks, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, all of that were flooding the airwaves,\u201d he described. \u201cAny other band could just have one member turn to the other and say, \u2018I quit.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Neither musician portrays a specific brother as a distinct role, but Gallardo provides insight into the brothers.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we aren\u2019t dedicated to a specific role in the show, I find that I take nuances\u00a0from Phil,\u201d Gallardo believes. \u201cI came to find that Phil can be a little more playful, while Don is a serious bird.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Avoiding imitation was important to Mancuso. \u201cWe aren\u2019t specifically tributing either brother. When it comes to creating different tribute-style shows, we like to steer clear of imitation. We\u2019ll look the part with costumes, hair styles, instruments, etc., but we tend to think that nobody can really beat the originals,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo, we try to create a salute to these greats.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Throughout this show, the two trade off taking on something Don or Phil sang lead on as Mancuso explains is for the simple reason that one of two said, \u201cHey, can I sing that part?\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice having a working relationship with your best friend where we can just easily trade ideas, step up for each other, and work together to deliver what\u2019s best for the show,\u201d he adds.\n<\/p>\n

A legacy that\u00a0still resonates<\/p>\n

While audiences might be familiar with the classic songs, Gallardo provides insight into what he believes audiences will take away after seeing the show.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI think seeing the arc of the Everly Brothers\u2019 professional career will be something audiences will be surprised by,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe brothers faced real turmoil advancing their musical careers, and we provide some enlightening details in the show.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Mancuso adds that \u201cWe\u2019ve had mega-fans of the Everly Brothers come up to us and say, \u2018I didn\u2019t know that about them.\u2019 I think that\u2019s a really cool thing. We did our\u00a0research\u00a0when we put this show together, and we could fit in more info in 90 minutes. So, it\u2019s really rewarding when there are people who come up and tell us how they learned something new.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The biggest \u201cwhoa\u201d moment Mancuso says they aim for in all of their shows is the deep understanding of what it means to have something be\u00a0timeless.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThese songs still hold up today, they\u2019re catchy, they\u2019re about things we still experience today, and they\u2019re so smartly arranged,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s truly a joy to see young people, or even adults, who don\u2019t know this music coming in, and leaving as new fans of the Everly Brothers. Plus, the documentary component of the show really adds a layer of humanizing them, so you can understand the full cultural impact of the songs.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The Everly Brothers\u2019 music spans multiple generations. \u201cPatrons who grew up with the Everly\u2019s will feel the thrill of nostalgia, transported back to hearing these classics on the radio,\u201d Longenhagen said. \u201cConcurrently, younger audiences and contemporary music fans will find immense joy in uncovering the origins of the harmony styles utilized by their own favorite modern artists. It is a spectacular bridge between generations.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Audiences cannot fully appreciate the Everly Brothers without recognizing that they created the blueprint for modern pop and rock harmonies, Longenhagen believes.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cBy incorporating tracks from The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Simon and Garfunkel, the show illustrates a beautiful musical lineage. The Everly sound didn\u2019t stay in the 1950s and 60s\u2014it shaped the soundtrack of the entire world and the music we listen to today,\u201d he continued. \u201cAudiences will walk away realizing that these timeless tracks weren\u2019t just catchy radio hits; rather, they were hard-won milestones of a revolutionary musical partnership. The Everly\u2019s had 35 billboard charting hits. More than any other duo in American Musical history.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
