{"id":396693,"date":"2026-09-11T08:58:50","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T08:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/396693\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T08:58:50","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T08:58:50","slug":"tampa-bay-watch-exhibit-highlights-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/396693\/","title":{"rendered":"Tampa Bay Watch exhibit highlights wildlife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">A new art exhibit at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbwdiscoverycenter.org\/art-exhibitions\" style=\"color: #0066cc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tampa<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbwdiscoverycenter.org\/art-exhibitions\" style=\"color: #0066cc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Bay Watch Discovery Center<\/a> in St. Pete is highlighting Florida\u2019s wildlife and natural ecosystems while drawing attention to the environmental impact of fast fashion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">The exhibit, called \u201cSoul Tides,\u201d features work by artist and designer Cora Van Vleet. It includes mixed media pieces, recycled textile sculptures and paintings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Van Vleet said recycled materials are central to her work. In one piece, she used donated clothing, including old T-shirts and leggings, to create something new.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cBeing an artist, it is where I thrive and where I\u2019m most passionate, is when I\u2019m making and creating things,\u201d Van Vleet said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">She said the exhibit reflects her interest in both art and environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a group work of my mixed media pieces with recycled textiles and also my recycled textile sculptures,\u201d Van Vleet said. \u201cAnd then some of my paintings that have brought me to this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Van Vleet said she often works with recycled textiles because of concerns about the textile industry and fast fashion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cThe textile industry and fast fashion are really kind of hurting the environment right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Her goal, she said, is to encourage visitors to think about the environment and the wildlife that depends on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cI just am hoping to spark a passion in them, to care about the environment and the creatures that live in it as much as I can,\u201d Van Vleet said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Tampa Bay Watch, the environmental nonprofit that runs the Discovery Center, uses education and community outreach to connect people with the bay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Leah Beery, executive director of education for Tampa Bay Watch, said art can help reach people who may not be drawn first to science programs or outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cIf they love art and can interact with art that is about nature, like the \u2018Soul Tides\u2019 exhibition, then they can get excited about it, and it\u2019s a pathway to a deeper connection with more people,\u201d Beery said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Van Vleet said she hopes the exhibit encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the natural world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cMy hope is that it makes people reflect a little bit on that wall between us and the world around,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cSoul Tides\u201d is on display at the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center through Oct. 16.
