9\/11: 25 Years | UCF Restores shares hope, resources for those living with PTSD<\/p>\n

As the nation marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks, reminders of the day are everywhere\u2014on TV, social media, and in conversations. <\/p>\n

For many, the remembrance of 9\/11 serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of trauma. <\/p>\n

For those living with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, WESH 2 is committed to reminding our community there are resources and support available. <\/p>\n

Dr. Deborah Beidel, executive director of UCF Restores, explained the center’s mission and purpose. <\/p>\n

The Orlando-based clinical research center provides treatment for individuals who have experienced trauma, offering evidence-based treatments that are designed to help people recover from PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. <\/p>\n

“We’re trying to change the way that we think about and treat this condition,” Beidel said. <\/p>\n

Beidel shared common and uncommon symptoms including re-experiencing the trauma through nightmares or flashbacks, avoiding situations that remind them of the trauma, even familiar senses, for example, scents. <\/p>\n

Beidel shared her message for those reliving the tragic day, battling PTSD and seeking healing. <\/p>\n

“Be good to yourself,” she said. <\/p>\n

Beidel says post-traumatic growth is attainable, and recommends people find a fitting therapist, practitioner, physician, spiritual advisor, or loved one to help them navigate their feelings. <\/p>\n

“There is no one-size-fits-all,” Beidel said. “Everyone responds to treatment differently.” <\/p>\n
