(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/\">WWSB<\/a>) &#8211; Daniel Conahan Jr. was executed by lethal injection Thursday evening at Florida State Prison, nearly three decades after he was convicted of kidnapping and murdering a Southwest Florida man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The 72-year-old\u2019s execution was carried out at 6:12 p.m. September 10, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Conahan was convicted of the 1996 kidnapping and murder of 21-year-old Richard Allen Montgomery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Investigators said Conahan lured Montgomery to a wooded area in Charlotte County, where he was strangled and killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/07\/28\/florida-executes-two-inmates-same-day-including-man-who-would-be-oldest-states-modern-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mysuncoast.com\/2026\/07\/28\/florida-executes-two-inmates-same-day-including-man-who-would-be-oldest-states-modern-era\/\">Florida executes two inmates on same day, including man who would be oldest in state\u2019s modern era<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Evidence found at the scene indicated Montgomery had been tied to a tree and strangled. His body was discovered the day after his death by county utility workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Montgomery case became part of a larger investigation known as the \u201cHog Trail Murders,\u201d involving several men who were found dead across Southwest Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Conahan was never charged in those other homicides. However, investigators have long suspected he could have been connected to additional victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">One of those suspected victims was William Melarango, whose body was discovered in March 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Members of Melarango\u2019s family were among the people who witnessed Conahan\u2019s execution Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The family provided ABC 7 with two written statements describing the pain and trauma they have endured over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">They also expressed hope that Conahan\u2019s execution will mark the beginning of a new chapter of healing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Twenty people witnessed Conahan\u2019s execution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Conahan did not make a final statement. He instead chose to meet with a spiritual adviser before his execution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Thursday\u2019s execution was the 15th carried out in Florida so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">For families who have spent decades living with unanswered questions surrounding suspected victims, Conahan\u2019s death marks an emotional moment and, they hope, a step toward closure.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWSB.
