September 11th, 2001, is a day that changed the lives of millions of people forever.

“It changed the United States,” said Special Agent in Charge FBI Jacksonville Jason Carley. “It changed the way law enforcement, especially federal law enforcement, approached things.

When the attacks happened, Carley was serving in the army.

He said since 9/11, the FBI adjusted to be a more intelligence-driven, threat-based agency.

“One of the most significant changes for us is the intelligence exchange that we have,” said Carley. “Making sure we’re sharing information, state and local partners, and working together to mitigate threats that are out there to ensure that something like that never happens again.”

We asked Carley if he believed the FBI would operate the way it does now if 9/11 never happened.

“I think we were going to transition as an organization over time,” Carley said. “We still always were having sources and being very cognizant of the national security threat that was out there. However, those attacks, such a significant attack, did accelerate that adjustment.”

Carley says since 9/11, 33 FBI agents have died from 9/11 related illnesses. One FBI agent was killed on that day.

He says it’s important to never forget that day.
