Two of Miami\u2019s most recognizable former broadcast journalists are part of a new public awareness campaign demanding local Republican congressional members denounce federal immigration raids, calling the tactics \u201cauthoritarian\u201d and immoral. <\/p>\n

Michael Putney, the longtime political reporter for WPLG-Channel 10, and Leticia Callava, a former anchor for Univision, are speaking out in the \u201cKeep Them Honest\u201d campaign. The effort, funded by businessman Mike Fernandez, specifically seeks action on immigration from\u00a0 GOP Reps. Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Gimenez, and Mario Diaz-Balart.<\/p>\n

Appearing on the \u201cAnti-Social\u201d podcast, hosted by Tony Winton and Jan Dillow, Putney and Callava explained why they were speaking out after decades as objective journalists about the treatment of the immigrant community, which Putney said is \u201cbeing\u00a0 mistreated, thrown to the ground, tear gassed, harassed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed the vital role immigrants play in the region\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the people who build our condos, pick our fruits and vegetables, and care for our elderly,\u201d Putney said. \u201cThey are frightened, and they are our neighbors. They deserve to be treated with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Callava, herself a Cuban immigrant, directed a message to South Florida\u2019s Cuban-American community and its elected officials, saying many have a \u201cvery short memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSuddenly, Cubans have forgotten where they came from and how they got here and how they were received,\u201d Callava said.<\/p>\n

The group acknowledged that Rep. Salazar recently called election results a \u201cwake-up call\u201d regarding immigration, but Callava described her comments as insufficient.<\/p>\n

\u201cWords are words, but I want actions,\u201d Callava said, later adding, \u201cShe will lie and tell you one thing and do another thing just to get the votes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Putney suggested the representatives remain silent because they fear political retribution.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump is so vindictive, you can be sure that if they spoke out strongly against him, that they would pay a price,\u201d Putney said.<\/p>\n

Both clarified that the campaign is not advocating for open borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of us want criminal aliens,\u201d Putney said. \u201cBut we want legal quality immigration and forgiveness\u2026 for the huge amount of immigrants who are in our community who are upstanding contributing taxpaying members.\u201d<\/p>\n
