{"id":397569,"date":"2026-09-12T03:24:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T03:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/397569\/"},"modified":"2026-09-12T03:24:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T03:24:07","slug":"orlando-fire-department-continues-9-11-remembrance-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/397569\/","title":{"rendered":"Orlando Fire Department continues 9\/11 remembrance tradition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 Orlando firefighters and community members gathered at Fire Station One to honor 404 first responders who died after responding to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, continuing a candlelight remembrance tradition that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlando.gov\/Events\/911-Remembrance-and-Candlelight-Ceremony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">began in 2002.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Orlando Fire Department ceremony included 404 candles, each representing a first responder who died on Sept. 11. The tradition began with a single white candle for the FDNY chaplain and has grown to include hundreds of red and blue candles for fallen crews.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Hirschkorn, a retired New York Fire Department inspector, said the anniversary remains difficult 25 years later. Hirschkorn said he lost several people close to him that day and continues to recover from long-term health problems connected to his response at Ground Zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m crying because the post traumatic stress, the hurt is very very bad. It\u2019s 25 years now,\u201d Hirschkorn said.<\/p>\n<p>Hirschkorn said part of his recovery includes a message he tells himself daily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan, God\u2019s not finished with you yet.
