Could Liam Coen’s offense maintain the momentum it built during last year’s AFC South-winning campaign? And, perhaps most importantly, could the Jaguars turn all that promise into the sort of convincing performances expected from a team with genuine postseason ambitions?

Consider the first test passed.

Jacksonville dismantled the Cleveland Browns 34-10 at EverBank Stadium on Sunday, racing into a 24-0 half-time lead before extending the advantage to 31-0 early in the third quarter. Cleveland eventually found a couple of consolation scores, but by then the Jaguars’ starters were already in cruise control.

So, what were the biggest reasons behind such a comprehensive opening-day victory?

Trevor Lawrence was simply outstanding

There isn’t really anywhere else to start.

Trevor Lawrence was magnificent. The Jaguars quarterback completed 18 of his 23 attempts for 245 yards and four touchdowns, without throwing an interception, finishing with a career-best 150.6 passer rating. More importantly, he looked completely in command of an offense that made Cleveland’s defense look lost for long stretches.

And this wasn’t a case of Lawrence piling up empty numbers after the game was already won. He did his damage immediately. Jacksonville scored touchdowns on each of its first two possessions, with Lawrence finding Parker Washington for 30 yards before connecting with rookie Josh Cameron for a four-yard score. He then added a third touchdown to Brenton Strange in the second quarter before finding Jakobi Meyers for a 32-yard score on the opening drive of the second half.

The particularly encouraging part for Jacksonville was how easy Lawrence made it look. Cleveland couldn’t consistently pressure him, couldn’t disguise enough to confuse him and, crucially, couldn’t keep the Jaguars’ receivers covered. Seven different Jacksonville players caught a pass in the first half alone.

This is the version of Lawrence Jacksonville needs if it is serious about making noise in January. He finished 2025 playing some of the best football of his career. On Sunday, he looked less like a quarterback hoping to prove last season was sustainable and more like one who knows exactly what he is now.

That is a frightening prospect for the rest of the AFC.

The Jaguars’ defense completely suffocated Cleveland

If Lawrence provided the fireworks, Jacksonville’s defense provided the foundation.

The Browns finished with 272 total yards, but that number is somewhat misleading given that they did much of their damage after the Jaguars had already established a 34-0 lead. For the first half, Cleveland managed just 95 net yards and five first downs.

And it started immediately.

Deshaun Watson’s first regular-season start since 2024 lasted just five plays before Foyesade Oluokun intercepted him, ending a promising Browns drive inside the Jacksonville 20-yard line.

Then the pressure kept coming. Cleveland punted on each of its next three possessions, before K.C. Concepcion Jr. fumbled in the second quarter. Josh Hines-Allen recovered, and Jacksonville promptly turned the mistake into another touchdown.

By half-time, the Browns weren’t just behind; they were completely out of the game.

The pass rush deserves particular credit. Hines-Allen finished with two sacks, while Travon Walker, Ventrell Miller and Branson Combs added one apiece. Jacksonville also forced two turnovers and held Cleveland to just one conversion on eight third-down attempts.

There will be much tougher offenses coming down the road. But if Jacksonville’s defense can consistently generate that sort of pressure while forcing opponents to play from behind, it gives the Jaguars a remarkably high floor.

Jacksonville’s offense was far more than Trevor Lawrence

It would be easy to look at the score and simply conclude that Lawrence won the game. And he certainly played the starring role. But Jacksonville’s offensive performance was impressive precisely because Cleveland couldn’t simply focus on stopping its quarterback.

The Jaguars scored on six of their first seven possessions, and Lawrence spread the ball around beautifully. Parker Washington led the way with five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, Brenton Strange and Josh Cameron all made significant contributions.

The variety was what stood out: Deep shots. Quick completions. Play-action. Screens. Throws outside the numbers. Throws over the middle. Jacksonville kept giving Cleveland different problems to solve, and the Browns never found the answer.

Even when the running game wasn’t spectacular statistically, the Jaguars remained committed to it. Bhayshul Tuten carried 15 times for 66 yards, while Jacksonville ran the ball 32 times overall. That balance helped keep Cleveland from simply turning the game into a pass-rush contest every time Lawrence dropped back.

And that might ultimately be the most encouraging takeaway of all. The Jaguars didn’t need one player to carry them; Lawrence was outstanding, but Liam Coen’s offense produced a genuinely complete performance.

It’s only Week 1, and nobody should be booking Jacksonville’s Super Bowl parade just yet. But this was about as emphatic an opening statement as Liam Coen could have asked for.

The Jaguars scored touchdowns on their first four possessions, led 24-0 at half-time and had the luxury of taking Lawrence out of the game with the score at 34-0. Cleveland’s late points did little to change the overall picture.

The quarterback looked elite. The defense was ferocious. And the offense had enough variety to make life miserable for Cleveland.

There will be considerably tougher tests ahead, but if this is what the 2026 Jaguars look like when they are only getting started, the rest of the AFC should probably be paying attention.

Jags fans, let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

There were plenty of questions surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars heading into the 2026 season.
