TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Florida\u2019s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles <\/a>says an international cybercriminal organization breached a state driver-record database after gaining access through compromised credentials belonging to a Plant City<\/a> Police Department user.<\/p>\n

The department said it learned of the breach on Sept. 4 and quickly contained it. Officials said there is no ongoing breach.<\/p>\n

The compromised account had access to the state\u2019s Driver and Vehicle Information Database, known as DAVID, which is used by law enforcement and authorized government agencies to access driver and vehicle records.<\/p>\n

The agency said its investigation found the user\u2019s credentials had been improperly stored on a personal electronic device before they were compromised.<\/p>\n

FLHSMV did not say how many records may have been accessed, what specific information may have been exposed or whether affected drivers will be notified.<\/p>\n

A cybercriminal group known as ShinyHunters has claimed it stole more than 200,000 Florida driver records. The state has not confirmed that number.<\/p>\n

Officials said they notified the Florida Attorney General\u2019s Office and are working with the Florida Digital Service and Florida Department of Law Enforcement<\/a> as the criminal investigation continues.<\/p>\n
