TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The price of diesel hit a new record high in Florida Monday, with AAA reporting the average price is now $6.31 cents a gallon.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s super high, super high,\u201d said trucker Marty Griffin as he filled up at a Midway truck stop Monday morning. The price at that pump was $6.09 a gallon.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got to work no matter what. You\u2019ve got to work,\u201d he said as the pump rolled past $665.<\/p>\n
His rig has two gas tanks, one on each side, which hold a total of 250 gallons of diesel.<\/p>\n
The Florida Trucking Association says prices are up more than 70% over this time last year. AAA shows diesel prices jumping from $3.54 a gallon this time last year to $6.31 now. <\/p>\n
\u201cOn an average day\u2019s work, which is around 500 miles, they\u2019re consuming anywhere from 60 to 70 gallons of fuel per day just for that day of work. That translates to about $450 to $500 of expense per day,\u201d Florida Trucking Association President Scott Perry said. \u201cThat 70 percent increase year over year translates to about $200 per day of additional expense that they didn\u2019t have a year ago. On a 50 truck fleet, that\u2019s over $3 million a year, and that\u2019s extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perry says fuel has now surpassed wages as the number one cost for many trucking companies. <\/p>\n
The association\u2019s website says \u201cEverything you eat, wear and use was on a truck an average of four times before you purchased it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything you can think of that\u2019s on the shelves of retailers today is generally transported by truck,\u201d Perry said. \u201cThose are the things that are being impacted by the increase in costs from diesel that will ultimately be get passed down to consumers in some shape, form or fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n
