Body camera video showing a Miami-Dade deputy fatally shooting an armed teen in Miami Beach back in July<\/a> was released by the sheriff’s office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The footage shows the deadly July 24 encounter that killed 17-year-old Durrel Young.<\/p>\n

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Young and 18-year-old Valentino Berry were being investigated for firearms-related offenses by Homicide Street Violence Task Force detectives, who obtained a search warrant for the Miami Beach apartment where they were located.<\/p>\n

The sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team was serving the warrant at the apartment in the 700 block of 81st Street when the shooting happened.<\/p>\n

The bodycam footage shows SRT members breaching the apartment door before a woman comes out of a back room with her hands up.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, Young opens a door armed with a gun and is shot by a deputy.<\/p>\n

Young was pronounced dead at the scene, and his gun was found next to his body, officials said. None of the deputies were injured.<\/p>\n

“As your Sheriff, I remain committed to upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and public trust,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz said in a statement Tuesday. “Today, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is releasing a Critical Incident Video. We recognize that incidents of this nature raise questions and concerns within our community, and I believe the public has the right to see critical incidents involving law enforcement.”<\/p>\n

At the time of the shooting, Cordero Stutz said Young had a history of felony arrests, was wearing an ankle monitor while on probation for firearms violations, and was a registered gang member.<\/p>\n

Berry was arrested on charges including possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, cannabis possession and resisting an officer without violence, records showed.<\/p>\n

The incident remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard practice in police shootings.<\/p>\n
