JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A Jacksonville teen was sentenced to 30 years in state prison this week after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with a fatal shooting near Westside High School last year.<\/p>\n
Alex Reddice pleaded guilty to both charges July 28 during a pretrial hearing, reversing his initial not-guilty plea entered after his February 2025 arrest.<\/p>\n
Reddice, who was 16 at the time of his arrest, was accused of killing 31-year-old Carlos Alberto Nieves Rivera. <\/p>\n
The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office said officers were called to an apartment complex in the 5500 block of Firestone Road \u2014 across the street from Westside High School \u2014 at about 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 5, 2025, after receiving reports of gunshots.<\/p>\n
Officers arrived to find a man between the ages of 30 and 35 dead from a gunshot wound inside one of the apartments, later identified as Rivera. Witnesses told investigators they heard gunshots and saw several people running from the complex; Duval County School Police detained a number of them at the scene.<\/p>\n
Westside High School was placed on lockdown for most of that day as police investigated.<\/p>\n
Reddice was arrested the following morning, on Feb. 6, 2025, on murder and robbery charges.<\/p>\n
