TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The national conversation over artificial intelligence safeguards<\/a> seems to be intensifying this week.<\/p>\n

CEOs of AI companies, as well as leaders in Washington, are speaking out about slowing down the growth of the AI sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is welcome news to Gregorio Francis, an Orlando-based attorney who represents the family of Tiru Chabba.<\/p>\n

Chabba was one of the two men killed on Florida State University\u2019s campus in April 2025 after a gunman opened fire at the student union.<\/a><\/p>\n

Francis has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI<\/a> with claims that their chatbot, ChatGPT, aided the gunman in planning the attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation that happened at FSU is one of the prime examples of what can happen if we don\u2019t have the right protocols,\u201d Francis said.<\/p>\n

Francis said it was \u201ca little bit surprising\u201d to hear the growing concern from industry leaders about their own technology this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the responsible thing to do,\u201d Francis said. \u201cI mean, when you have the situation of what happened in Tallahassee and FSU, what happened in Canada with the other shooting case, you have to pause and say, what happened here? And how do we address this? How do we make sure that there are guardrails in place?\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis said this fresh dialogue surrounding AI bolsters his case against OpenAI.<\/p>\n

He said the discovery phase of the case should begin soon, with the possibility that the other lawsuits filed against the tech company in federal court will be consolidated down the line. <\/p>\n
