DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 A Jacksonville-area emergency room doctor was arrested last Wednesday after a Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office patrol officer clocked him driving 105 mph on Interstate 95 southbound, according to his arrest report. <\/p>\n
Editor\u2019s Note: News4JAX is not naming the driver because he is facing misdemeanor charges. Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced, and anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. For these reasons, News4JAX will not always name those charged.<\/p>\n
The 34-year-old was stopped before 7 p.m. on Sept. 9, near the I-95 and J. Turner Butler Boulevard interchange. <\/p>\n
He faces two misdemeanor charges: operating a motor vehicle at 100 mph or more in a manner that threatens a person or property, and an improper lane change.<\/p>\n
What officers observed<\/p>\n
According to JSO, an officer who was conducting a traffic deployment in the area, said he first spotted the driver\u2019s vehicle weaving through traffic before dramatically accelerating.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I was merging onto I-95, I was looking behind me to ensure a safe change of lane,\u201d the officer wrote in the arrest report. \u201cI observed the listed vehicle changing lanes in between multiple vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n
The officer estimated the vehicle\u2019s speed at approximately 90 mph as it passed him. He then activated his radar device and tracked the SUV at 105 mph. The posted speed limit in that area is 65 mph.<\/p>\n
\u2018Running late to an event\u2019<\/p>\n
After pulling the vehicle over, the officer said the driver explained he was in a hurry.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe indicated he was running late to get to an event,\u201d the report states. <\/p>\n
The officer noted the area around I-95 and JTB is one of JSO\u2019s designated high-fatality crash locations and was congested at the time of the stop. The driver was arrested and taken to the Duval County jail. <\/p>\n
Florida\u2019s Super Speeder Law <\/p>\n
Florida\u2019s \u201cSuper Speeder\u201d law went into effect in July of 2025. <\/p>\n
If drivers are caught going 50+ miles over the speed limit or at least 100 miles per hour, they face a criminal misdemeanor.<\/p>\n
The law also involves increased penalties for repeat convictions.<\/p>\n
A first conviction carries up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both. A second or subsequent conviction carries up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. A second or subsequent conviction within five years also triggers a driving-privilege revocation of at least 180 days and up to one year.<\/p>\n
