The weeks before training camp are supposed to be the most optimistic time of the year<\/a>. Everyone should believe in the best version of their team and be hopeful for the season ahead.<\/p>\n

The Orlando Magic certainly have plenty of faith in their team right now. They spent their offseason believing injuries were the big piece holding them back<\/a> and betting on the roster they have.<\/p>\n

That is the thing about the NBA discourse, though. Nothing ever really stands still. Nothing is ever stationary. And those who do stand still are the ones targeted most by the never-ending trade machine.<\/p>\n

The sharks are circling the Magic in the early trade rumor mill.<\/p>\n

There is no reporting backing anything at this point. It is pure speculation. The Magic have shown no indication that they will make any major move. They want to see their team healthy more than anything.<\/p>\n

But all of these way-too-early trade discussions mostly forget the Magic side of the discussion and what this team’s goals are.<\/p>\n

Orlando has no choice but to win, with most of their draft capital sent out until the 2031 Draft. The Magic are not giving away either of their All-Star-level players for cheap, and certainly not without recouping major assets in return.<\/p>\n

That does not mean there is no pressure. These rumors are not coming out of nowhere. The Magic ned to cut payroll win or lose to avoid the penalties of the first and second apron.<\/p>\n

Orlando is a team ripe to be active at the deadline to do some accounting.<\/p>\n

But Magic are not likely to consider the blockbuster trades that many around the league seem eager to construct. They still believe in the team they have built.<\/p>\n

The sharks are circling<\/p>\n

Even if it is entirely driven by fans and the sheer boredom of mid-September, there is no denying the pressure the Orlando Magic face this season.<\/p>\n

The Magic currently have one of the highest payrolls in the league and little Playoff success to show for it. <\/p>\n

Orlando’s decision not to touch the roster after last season’s disappointing 45-win season was a sign of faith that injuries were the cause of the team’s letdown. But it is also an ultimatum. <\/p>\n

The team cannot continue like this.<\/p>\n

That is why trade rumors are already formulating around the Magic.<\/p>\n

Everyone can see a decision coming with Anthony Black’s extension due up<\/a>. The Magic are roughly $18 million below the tax line before accounting for Black’s extension and have only invested in eight players.<\/p>\n

If the Magic are not able to compete with the top of the Eastern Conference this season, they will need to consider making fundamental changes.<\/p>\n

“The Paolo thing is to me, we know the Desmond Bane trade did not elevate them the way they wanted,” Sam Amick of The Athletic said on The Athletic NBA Daily<\/a>. “I just think you continue to have a formula and a payroll that needs to produce a legitimate Eastern Conference contender. If we get to January and it’s not, I wonder what those conversations might look like.”<\/p>\n

Amick noted the reported interest the Magic had in swapping Paolo Banchero for Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>. That was never quite substantiated. But the seeds have been planted.<\/p>\n

Star trades are inevitable in the NBA. Everyone is already sniffing around deals for Domantas Sabonis, Zion Williamson, Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, all on expiring contracts on struggling teams. Players always wriggle free. Disappointing seasons make them looser.<\/p>\n

If the Magic struggle early in the season, it would put them squarely in those conversations.<\/p>\n

Everyone is already circling the Magic with trade pushes and ideas.<\/p>\n

Fans have circulated a wild three-team deal pitched by Bleacher\/Report<\/a> that would send Paolo Banchero to the Golden State Warriors for Jimmy Butler and Yaxel Lendeborg (while losing both Wendell Carter and Goga Bitadze).<\/p>\n

Locked On Nets devoted a full episode to imagining a push to acquire Franz Wagner<\/a>, calling him gettable among the young stars in the league.<\/p>\n

Blazers Edge openly discussed the Orlando Magic as a team they should be monitoring<\/a> if they are hunting for another star. At least they can give the Magic back their 2028 first-round pick.<\/p>\n

It is all out there. It is impossible to ignore. Even if it remains far-fetched at this stage of the season.<\/p>\n

The Magic still want one thing<\/p>\n

Most of these “rumors” or speculations are not focused on the Orlando Magic side of the equation. They are the Coyote licking his lips and strapping the ACME rocket skates on to chase down his Roadrunner.<\/p>\n

They are hungry to add a star to their collection and are shoveling out whatever they need to make it work in the trade machine. Some of the ideas are just laughable.<\/p>\n

It also misses the key point for the Magic: They want to win.<\/p>\n

This is not a team that is going to deconstruct itself and start over. The Magic do not have the draft capital to do so. Their 2027 first-round pick<\/a> is the only pick the Magic own without any conditions until the 2031 Draft.<\/p>\n

There is no bottoming out. The Desmond Bane trade overleveraged the team. The Magic are all-in to keep competing.<\/p>\n

Orlando also has plenty of reasons to believe the pairing with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner can work<\/a>. The duo had a +4.5 net rating in their 429 minutes last year and a +3.8 net rating in 988 minutes in the 2025 season. <\/p>\n

There is room for improvement. Wagner must prove his durability again, and Banchero must prove he can keep improving his efficiency.<\/a><\/p>\n

It does not feel like this is a pure last chance for them to prove they can work together. If they keep showing signs, the Magic will likely conclude they need to rebuild the supporting cast around them. <\/p>\n

Both are under contract long -term. There is no rush to do anything.<\/p>\n

As long as Orlando believes this is a duo that can deliver them deeper into the Playoffs, they are under no pressure to break them up.<\/p>\n

This is the one area where the rumor mongers might have it right, though. A fourth straight season failing to advance out of the Playoffs might lead the Magic to conclude they need a bigger change. A third straight season in the Play-In Tournament might make a bigger shift inevitable.<\/p>\n

It is too early to consider breaking up the Magic’s star duo. But Orlando will be forced to make moves soon. And depending on where the Magic land, their stars will be under consideration for that shift.<\/p>\n
