This fall, a group of St. Petersburg middle school students won’t just learn about that challenge—they’ll investigate it firsthand, work alongside the professionals protecting our environment, transform recovered materials into meaningful works of art, and inspire others to become part of the solution.

The City of St. Petersburg, in collaboration with Water Warrior Alliance, proudly presents “Artivism: Vision & Voice,” a free environmental arts and community leadership program designed to connect students with the environment through exploration, creativity, leadership, and service. The City’s $50,000 investment in this innovative program reflects Mayor Welch’s commitment to Education and Youth Opportunities, one of his five Pillars for Progress.

“The City of St. Petersburg is proud to partner with the Water Warrior Alliance and help inspire the next generation of environmental leaders,” said Mayor Kenneth T. Welch. “This program will provide students with the opportunity to get involved in their community, learn about a new career path, and build their confidence. As we celebrate the start of this program, my administration remains committed to developing practical, real-world educational programs and youth opportunities leading to a better-prepared and educated workforce.”

“We want every student to leave this program believing they have the ability to make a difference,” said Jenna Byrne, Founder and President of Water Warrior Alliance. “When young people experience the environment firsthand, create something meaningful from what they discover, and share that story with their community, they begin to realize their voice has power. ‘Vision & Voice’ isn’t just about creating art—it’s about building confident young leaders who understand that their creativity, ideas, and actions can help shape a healthier future for our community.”

Throughout the ten-week program, nearly 30 St. Pete students will venture beyond the classroom to explore local waterways, participate in environmental cleanups, experience eco-tours, collaborate with artists, and learn directly from marine scientists, environmental educators, nonprofit leaders, conservation professionals, and community partners. Along the way, they will discover how diverse careers work together to protect Tampa Bay while gaining valuable skills that prepare them for future success.

Rather than simply learning about environmental issues, students will investigate them firsthand and transform their discoveries into original works of art created from reclaimed and recycled materials. By turning pollution into purpose, they will learn that creativity can educate, inspire, and spark meaningful environmental action.

“Vision & Voice” is intentionally designed to expose students to future career pathways while strengthening leadership, teamwork, communication, public speaking, creative problem-solving, and civic engagement. Participants will gain exposure to careers in marine science, environmental restoration, stormwater management, sustainability, environmental education, public art, nonprofit leadership, communications, ecotourism, and community engagement—all while making a tangible difference in the community they call home.

The program will culminate in a public community showcase where students will present their artwork, share the stories behind their creations, and demonstrate how young people can become powerful voices for environmental stewardship.

Learn More, Register, or Get Involved

https://www.waterwarrioralliance.org/event-details/artivism-vision-voice-presented-by-water-warrior-alliance-environmental-arts-community-leadership-program-2026-08-29-09

About Vision & Voice

“Vision & Voice” is a free environmental arts and community leadership program facilitated by Water Warrior Alliance in partnership with the City of St. Petersburg.
