{"id":402370,"date":"2026-09-17T09:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T09:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/402370\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T09:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T09:48:14","slug":"a-battle-is-brewing-over-this-140-year-old-central-florida-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/402370\/","title":{"rendered":"A battle is brewing over this 140-year-old Central Florida house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">LONGWOOD, Fla. \u2013 A century-old home in Longwood is the center of a new initiative aimed at bringing it back to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">In a release this week, the Longwood Historic Society discussed the project, which involves the <a href=\"https:\/\/historiclongwood.com\/j-d-n-j-lewis-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/historiclongwood.com\/j-d-n-j-lewis-house\/\">1880s Lewis House<\/a> \u2014 one of the oldest surviving structures in the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">According to the group, the city voted to save the building and put together a budget to relocate it to Reiter Park, though when the city issued a formal request for proposals, only one bid came back. <\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" role=\"presentation\"  style=\"object-fit:cover;max-width:1280px;max-height:720px;aspect-ratio:1.7777777777777777;width:100%\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/EA3S2AQ4ORCWBHOCWQMYRUILVQ.png\"\/>The 1885 Lewish House, seen at the terminus of West Jessup Avenue (Jason Byrne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">That bid was substantially over budget, putting a stop to the city\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Per the LHS, municipal procurement can often be much pricier, so the group is now planning to execute the project itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">WHAT IS THE LEWIS HOUSE?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The building \u2014 named for its first two inhabitants, brothers J.D. and N.J. Lewis House (Jason Byrne)<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">While little is known about the brothers themselves, several families have lived there in the decades and century to follow, <a href=\"https:\/\/historiclongwood.com\/j-d-n-j-lewis-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/historiclongwood.com\/j-d-n-j-lewis-house\/\">according to LHS President Jason Byrne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">But when the Longwood Community Building was eventually constructed in 2002, the home had to be relocated to 116 West Bay Ave. to avoid being demolished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The LHS reports that the home faced being torn down yet again in 2015 when a developer wanted to build a new house on the lot, sparking another relocation to an empty lot at the end of Jessup Avenue, behind Christ Church and the police station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">THIRD TIME\u2019S THE CHARM&#8230; OR NOT?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Proposals pushed to renovate and move the building to Reiter Park in 2018, and later to Clock Tower Park.
