Tampa city council voted to move forward with the South Howard flood prevention project<\/a>. The more than $100 million plan targets areas like Parkland Estates and Palma Ceia Pines.<\/p>\n

Neighbors from Parkland Estates came out in full force asking the city to protect their homes. People who run businesses or work along South Howard said that they are worried that they may have to close their businesses if this project goes through. Ultimately the city sided with neighbors.<\/p>\n

City staff plans on using box culverts under South Howard Avenue to get water that often submerges neighborhoods like Parkland Estates to the Bayshore Boulevard outfalls.<\/p>\n

“The most basic responsibility of a city government is to protect the safety and security of the people that we serve. That means police and fire protection, it means emergency response, but it also means protecting homes and businesses from flooding,” Tampa City Council Chairman Alan Clendenin said.<\/p>\n

It will take around three years to complete. In order to finish this project, there will be heavy construction along South Howard.<\/p>\n

“That’s why we have attorneys involved and they’ll be examining all the different options we can do,” Steve Michelini with the SOHO Business Alliance said.<\/p>\n

Michelini said business owners and their employees will be negatively impacted.<\/p>\n

“There would be about 1,100 jobs that would be immediately affected and those are the permanent jobs, and then you have another 800 jobs that are temporary and part-time,” Michelini said.<\/p>\n

The SOHO alliance said it plans to appeal the decision and is even considering legal action.
