St. Petersburg, FL – A proposed redevelopment could transform unused land beneath Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg into a public park connecting nearby neighborhoods, trails and business districts.<\/p>\n
The nonprofit Friends of Trails Crossing is developing plans for Trails Crossing, a 12-acre mixed-use park estimated to cost $55 million. The project would replace surface parking and vacant areas with playgrounds, public art, green space, an outdoor market plaza, adult exercise stations and paths for pedestrians and bicyclists.<\/p>\n
Plans place the park between Fifth Avenue South and Burlington Avenue North. Organizers say it could improve connections among Historic Kenwood, Campbell Park, the Deuces corridor, the Pinellas Trail and the CSX rail corridor.<\/p>\n
Construction would occur in multiple phases. The first phase, planned between First Avenue South and Third Avenue South near the Pinellas Trail, is expected to cost approximately $15 million and take about three years to complete after work begins.<\/p>\n
Some land proposed for later phases is currently used for parking by Vertical Ventures, a nearby rock-climbing gym. Co-owner Hal Thureson said losing the spaces without a suitable replacement could affect the business. The city renewed the parking agreement last year, allowing time to prepare if the project moves forward.<\/p>\n
The Florida Department of Transportation owns the land beneath the interstate, requiring the city to reach an agreement with the agency before construction. Funding has also not been finalized. Organizers are considering government grants, private sponsorships and programming revenue.<\/p>\n
The nonprofit supported St. Petersburg\u2019s successful application for a $1.38 million federal Reconnecting Communities planning grant.
