Sophros Recovery<\/a>, said people often assume suicide risk is highest while someone is actively using substances. However, he said the risk can increase during the early stages of sobriety, particularly during the first 90 days.<\/p>\n\u201cPeople assume that once you remove the substances that there is no longer a risk,\u201d Padlo said. \u201cThe problem is that so often the substance was like an emotional anesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sophros Recovery, located near St. Johns Bluff Rd., helps people address addiction, substance abuse and related mental health concerns.<\/p>\n
Padlo said stopping substance use can bring difficult emotions to the surface, including guilt, shame, grief and the effects of fractured relationships or financial problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re also dealing with grief,\u201d Padlo said. \u201cIt\u2019s the loss of your old life. You\u2019ve gotta figure out who you are now.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said there is no specific point when recovery magically becomes easier.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve seen in the research studies that as more time goes on, that risk decreases,\u201d Padlo said.<\/p>\n
Padlo said the three primary components of recovery are therapy, medical treatment when necessary and community support.<\/p>\n
Sophros Recovery also recommends asking questions when considering an addiction treatment program, including:<\/p>\n
Do you experience withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop or cut back?<\/p>\n
Has substance use affected your focus, attendance or performance at work or school?<\/p>\n
Are long work hours, commuting or shift schedules harder to manage because of substance use?<\/p>\n
Family members and close friends can also play an important role in supporting someone in recovery.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to ask hard questions. It\u2019s OK,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018How\u2019s your sobriety going? Are you having any thoughts of suicide?\u2019 It\u2019s OK to ask that question.\u201d<\/p>\n
