It’s sad,” Espina said.

Espina is putting $50,000 of his own money toward the effort, with Doral serving as the first community where the program will operate.

The fund is being administered in partnership with the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, one of the oldest Latino civil rights organizations in the country.

Espina said the need has become particularly urgent.

“But now we’re seeing a need that I would say is almost unprecedented,” he said.

The fund is designed to provide temporary financial relief to families who suddenly lose a primary income earner because of an immigration detention.

Juan Proaño, president of LULAC, said a detention can leave families struggling to meet basic expenses.

“When a person loses their husband, or the person who works and brings
the income home, they don’t have the means to perhaps pay the rent at
the end of the month,” Proaño said.

Applicants can apply through LULAC’s website, LULAC.org. The organizations say they hope to process applications as quickly as possible, with a goal of making decisions within about five days.

For now, the program is limited to Doral residents.

But Espina hopes Doral will be just the beginning.

The long-term goal is to raise additional money and create a model that could be replicated in other communities experiencing similar challenges.

Proaño said the need for assistance is substantial.

As immigration enforcement continues to affect households across South Florida, organizers say the fund is intended to provide families with immediate, short-term help while they navigate the financial consequences of having a loved one detained.

As immigration enforcement continues to affect families and businesses across South Florida, a national civil rights organization and…

[15
225,227,226,1841
post-403980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hialeah","tag-hialeah","tag-hialeah-headlines","tag-hialeah-news","tag-immigration
["GET
