WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Gov. Ron DeSantis is raising new doubts about whether Florida\u2019s proposed property-tax amendment can win enough support to pass in November.<\/p>\n

A new St. Pete Polls survey shows 45% of Florida voters support Amendment 3<\/a>\u2014well below the 60% approval required for a constitutional amendment to pass.<\/p>\n

DeSantis <\/a>discussed the proposal while speaking at the University of Alabama\u2019s Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership. He was in Alabama for Florida State\u2019s game against the University of Alabama.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a live issue. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s going to pass with 60%,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cI wanted to be bolder. That would bring out more voters who were unenthused about voting. We\u2019ll see if those folks are enthused enough about the Legislature\u2019s proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The poll <\/a>found Amendment 3 has its strongest support among Republicans, with 63% in favor. Among independent voters, 40% support the proposal while 32% oppose it. Democrats oppose the amendment by a 48% to 24% margin.<\/p>\n

Amendment 3 would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. It would also lower the annual cap on assessment increases for non-homesteaded property\u2014including many businesses and rental properties\u2014from 10% to 5%.<\/p>\n

The final version approved by the Florida Legislature does not go as far as the governor had wanted.<\/p>\n

DeSantis had pushed to include school property taxes in the expanded homestead exemption. He also wanted a state fund to help fiscally constrained counties deal with lost revenue. Those provisions were left out of the amendment that will go before voters.<\/p>\n

Supporters say the proposal would provide property-tax relief for homeowners and businesses. Opponents, including local governments and law enforcement groups, warn it could reduce money available for public services.<\/p>\n
