Joey Fatone\u2019s Fat One\u2019s Hot Dogs & Italian Ice opened at Universal CityWalk<\/a> on September 19, and we ate our way through most of what the boy band member-turned-restaurateur has to offer.

Footlong hot dog piled high with roasted pork, pepperoni, chili beans, Cheddar cheese sauce, red onion sauce, fries, soft bun<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

We had to start with the restaurant\u2019s signature dog, a footlong topped with multiple meats, beans, cheese, and fries (yes, on the dog), plus a sprinkling of chives. The bun is lightly toasted but still soft inside for a nice textural contrast. The hot dog is split and cooked just right, and the toppings, while piled on, are proportional so that you get all the flavors and textures in each bite. That also means it\u2019s messy and not conducive to picking up and eating, so we advise cutlery.<\/p>\n

Even on a 90-plus degree day after standing in the sun, this was an easy 7, and we\u2019ll enjoy it even more on a cooler day \u2014 especially with napkins and forks.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian \u2013 $14.99<\/p>\n

Grilled linguica sausage, onion sauce, jalape\u00f1o vegan mayo, Cotija, Calabrian honey, red peppers, cilantro, potato sticks, brioche bun<\/p>\n

This sausage is spicy, but we really like it! We loved the warm, smoky spice that permeated every bite of this. If you\u2019re sensitive to heat, this might be a little too much for you. Not all of the spice is just heat; a lot of it is flavorful, due to the number and variety of ingredients. While we didn\u2019t quite understand the need to put vegan mayo on a non-vegan dish, it didn\u2019t detract.<\/p>\n

Note that we found the casing to be a little tough to cut through, so this is the one dog that we found easier to pick up and eat (but only if you\u2019re not sharing).<\/p>\n

Dirty K-Pop Dog \u2013 $10.49<\/p>\n

Korean-inspired hot dog with kimchi slaw, spicy gochujang mayo, scallions, crispy onions, black sesame, brioche bun<\/p>\n

This one had two tough acts to follow between the Fat One footlong and the Brazilian dog, and unfortunately this one was the first to fall short. There\u2019s a lot of texture differences happening here, crunchy and not-so-crunchy, if you enjoy that in your hot dog toppings. The dog itself had a little snap to the casing, but flavor-wise was just a normal hot dog. For something supposedly Korean-inspired, we felt they needed to go spicier and more aggressive. This is less inspired and more suggestive.<\/p>\n

Johnny\u2019s Pizza \u2013 $12.49<\/p>\n

Neapolitan tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, pepperoni, Parmesan-parsley butter, brioche bun<\/p>\n

This mash-up of a pepperoni pizza with a hot dog won us over despite its crazy appearance. The soft bun is soaked through with Parmesan butter, so between that and the sauce (which we loved), this is not structurally sound enough to eat with your hands. With the pizza-meets-hot-dog profile, kids will probably love this; just garnish it with a chicken nugget.<\/p>\n

The Vegan \u2013 $13.99<\/p>\n

\"Vegan<\/a><\/p>\n

For a vegan sausage, this is not that bad, and the toppings were tasty, if a bit traditional. We always appreciate theme parks making the effort to include vegans on their menus, and this is a pretty good option.<\/p>\n

Loaded Pop Fries with Cheese, Bacon, Ranch & Chives \u2013 $7.49<\/p>\n

We got the loaded fries with bacon, ranch, cheese, and chives. Under all those toppings, the fries themselves are a little mushy. When you pile this much stuff on top of fries, the fries have to be crisp enough to support it, and these fries are just a bit short of perfect.<\/p>\n

In short, you can get loaded fries anywhere, and if you\u2019re coming here, go for one of the fantastic hot dogs instead.<\/p>\n

\"Italian<\/a><\/p>\n

Fat One\u2019s offers six flavors of Italian ice, all of which are vegan and gluten-sensitive: lemon, mango, tropical, cherry, cotton candy, and blue raspberry. Each flavor is available as a single scoop for $6.79 or with a shot of alcohol for $13.79. We tried a small sampling of the flavors on hand.<\/p>\n

Blue Raspberry Italian Ice \u2013 $6.79<\/p>\n

The single serving comes scooped in a paper cup and is served with a spoon. The scoop is densely packed, but the texture of the ice itself is nice and smooth. The blue raspberry flavor was a good match, a refreshing and sweet (albeit conventional) choice.<\/p>\n

Cotton Candy Italian Ice \u2013 $6.79<\/p>\n

We opted to try the cotton candy because it\u2019s an unusual flavor to find in Italian ice. It starts subtle but then builds to a nice punch of sweetness that isn\u2019t sickly or overwhelming, which is impressive for a cotton candy flavor. Overall, these are really refreshing and a great treat on a hot day.<\/p>\n

Lemon Italian Ice with Alcohol \u2013 $13.79<\/p>\n

All of the Italian ice flavors can be ordered with a shot of alcohol \u2014 vodka, bourbon, or rum. In this form, you get a larger serving of the ice in a plastic cup with the alcohol in a pipette (still no straw, though). We tried the classic lemon Italian ice with a vodka shot.<\/p>\n

This was an automatic 7. We never knew we needed boozy Italian ice in our lives, but after standing in the sun for hours, the combo of tart, refreshing lemon with vodka was absolutely delicious.<\/p>\n

We also saw guests ordering up to three different flavors in one cup this way, so we wanted to note that as an option.<\/p>\n

Fat One\u2019s was founded by Fatone and Joe Mulvihill<\/a> and first opened at The Florida Mall in 2016. After that location closed, the concept continued in food-truck form before finding its new permanent home at Universal CityWalk in the former Hot Dog Hall of Fame space, across from Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food.<\/p>\n

The brand was inspired partly by Fatone\u2019s upbringing in Brooklyn, where hot dogs and Italian ice were familiar neighborhood offerings. The CityWalk restaurant expands on the original concept with nine signature hot dogs developed in collaboration with Universal Orlando\u2019s culinary team.<\/p>\n
