They climbed out of the Play-In, took a 3-1 lead on a 60-win Detroit team, and then gave away a 24-point lead in Game 6 before losing in seven. It was the third consecutive first-round exit, and it ended Jamahl Mosley’s tenure. Sean Sweeney, a first-time head coach who built his name on the defensive side of the bench in San Antonio, Dallas and Milwaukee, takes over.

Almost nothing else changed. Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane, Jalen Suggs and Wendell Carter Jr., the five highest-paid players on the roster, all return. Nikola Vucevic is back in Orlando on a one-year, $3.9 million contract, Jonathan Isaac and Jevon Carter were retained, and Moritz Wagner left for Brooklyn. The front office tripled down on its own group, and the season opens at Kia Center against Atlanta on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. ET.

The books see a middle-of-the-pack Eastern team, and they do not agree on how far down the middle. A $100 title ticket pays $6,000 in profit at BetRivers and $4,000 at FanDuel. The conference ticket pays $2,000 against $1,500. That is a third to a half more money for the identical result, which settles the question of where any Magic outright belongs.

The ranking matters as much as the price. FanDuel slots Orlando eighth in the East at +1500, just ahead of Indiana and Atlanta at +1600. BetRivers has the Magic level with Atlanta at +2000 and behind Indiana at +1400, which makes them the ninth or tenth choice in a conference headed by New York and Philadelphia at +350. Both books are describing a Play-In team.

FanDuel’s win ladder draws the same picture in finer detail. Orlando is -260 to reach 45 wins and +260 to reach 50, mirror-image prices that place the market’s expectation squarely in the 45-to-49 band. Last season’s total was 45 on the nose.

SHOP MAGIC FUTURES AT FANDUELWhat Changed: A New Voice and One Minimum Contract

The argument for running it back is a number: 182. That is how many minutes Banchero, Wagner, Bane, Suggs and Carter played together last season. Wagner appeared in only 34 games and Suggs in 57, and Orlando still won 45 times.

Sweeney’s first job is the defense. The Magic ranked second in defensive efficiency in 2024-25 and slid outside the top 10 last season, and a roster this big at every position has no excuse for sitting outside the top 10. The early-season version of that defense allowed the fewest three-point attempts in the league and funneled everything toward long-armed wings and centers. If that returns, the regular-season floor is high.

Vucevic is the only rotation addition, and the price makes him a bargain. He averaged 15.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season and left larger offers on the table to come back. Orlando’s bench was a bottom-five unit, and a big man who can score in the post, pick and pop, and pass from the elbow gives the second unit an identity it lacked. His defense will need cover from Isaac, Suggs or Black, which is manageable in 18 to 22 minutes a night.

The Problem the Market Is Pricing: Shooting

Orlando finished 18th in offensive rating at 114.2, the 14th straight season below league average. The Magic shot 34.3% from three, 27th in the league, and the failure was execution, not shot quality: 59% of their threes were wide open, the third-highest share in the NBA, and they ranked 28th at making them. They went 23-7 when they merely hit the league-average 36% from deep. They got there only 30 times.

The Detroit series exposed all of it. Orlando averaged 101.9 points over seven games, missed 23 consecutive field goals in one stretch, and scored 19 points on 47 second-half possessions in Game 6. Its 45.6% shooting in the paint was the worst by any team in a playoff series in seven years, a remarkable figure for a side built around two giant downhill forwards.

The fixes are internal. Bane played all 82 games and shot 39.1% from three on only 5.2 attempts, a volume that has to rise. Banchero made 30.5% from deep and Carter 31.9%; getting either to 34% changes the geometry of every Banchero drive. Wagner averaged 24.2 points across 60 games two seasons ago and 20.6 in his 34 appearances last year. Simply having him on the floor is worth several wins.

CLAIM YOUR BETRIVERS OFFER AND BACK ORLANDOThe Awards Board: Sweeney, Black and a Banchero Long Shot

Sweeney is +1000 for Coach of the Year at BetRivers, in the second tier behind Darko Rajakovic and Erik Spoelstra at +800. The man he replaced, now in New Orleans, is +6000. The case writes itself: the award goes to the coach whose team most exceeds expectations, the market expects a Play-In side, and a healthy Wagner plus a top-10 defense could lift Orlando into the top five without a single roster move. Voters love a first-year coach attached to a jump in the standings.

Anthony Black at +2000 for Sixth Man of the Year is the other price worth a look. He averaged 15.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals last season and is the designated scorer of the second unit. The catch is eligibility. Black started 40 of his 64 games because of injuries ahead of him, and a repeat of that would take him out of the race through no fault of his own. The ticket is really a bet on Suggs and Wagner staying healthy.

Banchero at +25000 for MVP is a lottery ticket, not an analysis. He averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists, then 26.3, 9.0 and 6.3 in the playoffs, including 33 a night across the final three games against Detroit once Wagner went down. He is 23. For the price to matter, Orlando would need a top-two seed and Banchero would need to push past 27 points a game with real efficiency. Suggs at +15000 for Defensive Player of the Year runs into Victor Wembanyama at -360 and can be left alone.

Dates to CircleOct. 21 vs. Atlanta — Opening Night at Kia Center, 7 p.m. ET, against the team priced right beside Orlando on both conference boards.Nov. 16 at Boston — the first national TV game, on Peacock and NBC Sports Network.Dec. 14 vs. Philadelphia — a home date with the East co-favorite.March 28 and March 30 vs. New York — two games in three days against the defending champions, on ESPN and NBC, in the thick of the seeding race.Best Bets and Predicted Finish

Best Bet: Sean Sweeney Coach of the Year at +1000 at BetRivers. It is the one Magic market that pays out on exactly the scenario the roster was kept together for: health, a defensive rebound and a climb up the standings.

Line-shopping play: Eastern Conference winner at +2000 at BetRivers, not +1500 at FanDuel. A small stake only. Orlando had the East’s top seed beaten before Wagner’s injury, and playoff Banchero is a different player from the regular-season one.

Value angle: Anthony Black Sixth Man of the Year at +2000 at BetRivers. Real production, a clear role and a fair price, with the starts count as the known risk.

Long shot: the title at +6000 at BetRivers. Only for those who want it, and never at FanDuel’s +4000.

Pass: 45+ wins at -260 at FanDuel. The Magic won exactly 45 last season and the conference around them improved: New York is the champion, Philadelphia loaded up, Toronto added Kawhi Leonard and Indiana gets Tyrese Haliburton back. Laying -260 on a number with no margin is poor business. The +260 on 50 wins is the more interesting side of that ladder if health cooperates.

Predicted finish: 46-36, seventh in the East, a third straight Play-In and a first-round series Orlando is capable of winning this time.

Before locking in a ticket that will not settle until spring, compare the full list of US sportsbooks, check current sportsbook promos, and read the reviews for FanDuel and BetRivers.
