Port St. Lucie<\/a> leaders are set to discuss an updated long-term transportation plan Monday as the city prepares for continued population growth and increasing demands on its roads.<\/p>\n

According to the City Council agenda<\/a>, Port St. Lucie is planning for a population of more than half a million people by 2050. The city currently has more than 250,000 residents.<\/p>\n

The proposed mobility plan lays out transportation improvements through 2050, including future road and intersection projects, sidewalks, trails, bike lanes and potential transit improvements.<\/p>\n

Maps included with the plan show several short-term roadway projects planned between 2025 and 2030. Those include new roads, road widening projects and upgrades designed to create more complete streets for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.<\/p>\n

The larger multimodal plan looks beyond traditional road construction, identifying a network of transportation corridors and shared-use paths intended to give residents more ways to travel throughout the city.<\/p>\n

According to the agenda<\/a>, council members will also discuss changes to the city\u2019s mobility fee structure, including a phased increase in fees charged to new development.<\/p>\n

Mobility fees are one-time charges applied to new development, redevelopment or changes in land use. The city says the fees are paid by developers rather than existing residents or property owners and can be used to fund transportation projects such as roads, sidewalks, bike lanes and transit.<\/p>\n

The goal is to have new growth contribute<\/a> toward the transportation improvements needed to support it as Port St. Lucie continues expanding.<\/p>\n

The Port St. Lucie City Council workshop is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday.<\/p>\n
