It’s been 35 years since the Village of Key Biscayne became mostly locally controlled, incorporating on June 18, 1991, becoming the first new municipality in Dade County in more than 50 years.<\/p>\n

Now, on Saturday, Sept. 26, it’s time to celebrate!<\/p>\n

“It should be a nice family day,” Village Manager Steve Williamson said.<\/p>\n

Among the highlights of the 35th Anniversary Community Festival is the Vendor Village, showcasing a myriad of local businesses, nonprofits and creators made possible by the Key Biscayne Community Foundation<\/a> and Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n

The Vendor Village, at the Village Green Park’s promenade, takes place from 5-9 p.m., and includes live music, community performances, children’s activities, field games and, of course, restaurant, business and community vendors.<\/p>\n

The day begins in the morning with weightlifting and sports competitions at the Community Center. During mid-afternoon, there will be a 5-on-5 adult soccer tournament, preceding the Vendor Village activities.<\/p>\n

“It should be a good event,” Williamson said.<\/p>\n

One of the side events at the Village Green is being hosted by Friends of Cape Florida<\/a>, called “Cape Chronicles: The Living History of Cape Florida & Key Biscayne.”<\/p>\n

The event, from 4-8 p.m., invites the public to meet the celebrities who shaped the island and community and learn more about the milestone events and also the history of Cape Florida.<\/p>\n

Guests can also visit the new mobile museum kiosk, which includes the living history of Key Biscayne and the Cape Florida Lighthouse, going back to the Salt Water Underground Railroad and the life of the Tequesta and Seminole tribes.<\/p>\n

The 35th Anniversary Celebration actually gets underway on Thursday, Sept. 24, a day before Williamson’s birthday.<\/p>\n

A private, invitation-only reception honoring former and current officials, dating back to the original trustees, will take place at the Ritz-Carlton, another event hosted by the Key Biscayne Community Foundation. Several officials from local civic groups, schools, churches and the Chamber of Commerce will be in attendance.<\/p>\n

Just for added measure, on Friday, Sept 25, the Novecento restaurant will be hosting<\/a> its own 35th anniversary celebration at The Square with live music by the Cuarteto Miami Social Club.
